The rest of the line-up is pretty fun: friend of the show Tove Lo, party maniacs DNCE and mister funtimes himself, James Arthur. Plus Bastille and newcomer Tory Lanez.

Top of the Pops, 2nd June 2016

We have some star power this week. There's the chart return of the Take That boys, guesting with Sigma, but that might even be eclipsed by a medley from friend of the show Justin Bieber. They rub shoulders with international glitterati Ariana Grande and Nick Jonas. Even Cookin' on 3 Burners are showing a nice bit of star potential as they debut.

At number one it's STILL the Drake track, which is approaching a half-Bryan Adams at the top. This week Drake takes the night off and guest vocalist Wizkid gives us a unique afro-style version with smooth backing from Craig David.

Debuts: Kungs, Cookin' on 3 Burners.

Top of the Pops, 21st April 2016

The big chart story this week is Drake's mighty leap to number 1, but unfortunately he is on the other side of the pond so we have to make do with a video montage. The resurgent TOTP is spoiling its viewers with special exclusive performances. In the absence of Demi, Olly Murs duets with none other than Tove Lo. In the absence of Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson backs up the living legend that is Dappy. In the presence of two top 40 climbers, Sia gives an arty mashup of them both. And friend of the show Ed Sheeran invites remix pals Rudimental to perform Bloodstream with him, so we get that guy in the hat going 'Yeah, yeah' over it.

Jess Glynne is still number 1.

Top of the Pops, 26th February 2015

Three shades of cinema tie-ins this week as Ellie Goulding continues to tie up the number 1 slot, while fellow bondage-beneficiary The Weeknd has two charting songs from the soundtrack of the moment. Most other appearances are reprises of previously featured songs, but note that all the artists do take the time to visit the studio again - there are no repeated performances on this show, folks.

Our new entry comes from sometime presenter Marvin Humes's Luvbug, and the most special performance is once again down to Olly Murs: with Demi Lovato out of the country, he recruits Princess Ellie to help out for an exclusive one-off duet.

It's their fifth week at number one and glory be, Mark Ronson and Bruno have made it into the studio, with electrifying results. At the other end of some imaginary scale, friends of the show Sam Smith and George Ezra team up for a joint performance of two of their long-running faves.

Speaking of singer/songwriters, Hozier strides to his highest chart peak yet and newcomer James Bay rides the crest of his Brits wave. And there's even newer new blood from fellow start-of-year accoladees Years and Years and likeable American dark horses Echosmith.

Molly's Children of the World gets a pre-Eurovision TOTP showing as it storms into the chart at number 48, while five other female acts are also climbing the hit parade. Perhaps going some way to cancelling out the Chris Brown appearance, which in fairness has been a long time coming as his hit, now finally invading the top 10, has been around the top 20 for weeks. The new old MJ song is played over a montage of previous TOTP highlights, and the succession of in-at-the-top bangers continues with Calvin and a troupe of mixed-gender backing dancers.

Top of the Pops, 17th April 2014

As another soulful house anthem crashes in at the top, Sigma rise to the challenge of standing out and bring a confetti carnival of dancers and singers to sell their smash. The Vamps are no less ebullient, and Paloma Faith is on imperious form as her song gets a second wind.

Katy Perry's rapping friend Juicy J is elsewhere, so Iggy and Charli seize the chance to add a sassy one-off rap of their own, freshening up Dark Horse in its 16th week on the chart. And there are entries from two much-loved veteran pop bands, the Saturdays and the Kaiser Chiefs, plus newcomer Tove Lo.
