Top of the Pops, 19th December 2019

With one week to go, the contenders for Christmas number 1 are manoeuvring into position, spearheaded by the mighty Stormzy and then Dua Lipa. Although it all presupposes that it's even possible to dislodge Tones & I, who is inching up the all-time list of long-running number 1s.

Also in the festive spirit (ie wearing Santa hats) are Leona Lewis, Lewis Capaldi and the highest new entrant Harry Styles. And britrap, the genre of 2019, is not forgotten thanks to Young T and Bugsey (as well as Stormzy of course).

It's a big week for chart climbers. Not only do we have the annual Christmas song invasion, but returning friend of the show The Weeknd leapfrogs all of them, and Ellie Goulding has been pretty nifty too.

Christmas is represented by an old performance from Wham! and an in-person appearance by Ariana Grande. And with many of the acts climbing the chart being from the 70s, Trevor Daniel is able to sneak himself an invitation from number 40.

As we hurtle towards December, there are new entries from three big names: chart leviathan Lewis Capaldi, tousled enigma Harry Styles (who performs his longer runner Lights Up as well) and biggest of all, Miss 2019 Billie Eilish, who continues to make it look very easy.

There's also a special party performance from Lizzo with help from Tones & I, a debut appearance from Endor, and some rather off-putting racket from Blackbear.

After last week's chart mayhem, this TOTP is the complete opposite: every song in the top 5 gets to appear, and they're all tracks that have been around for quite some time. Crowning it all is King Ed Sheeran, still top of the chart, though he mixes it up a bit by mixing in a bit of Beautiful People, thanks to a cameo by friend of the show Khalid.

For a bit of variety we do have a triple bill from Burna Boy, who features on three chart climbers this week. He performs his bits of all of them, bringing along TOTP debutante Mahalia to help with the most obscure of the three.

It's been pretty slow-moving chart lately, but this week we have absolute fireworks. Not only does the Charlie's Angels theme crash in just short of the top spot (sadly only two of the pop triumvirate are here to perform it) but we also have chartbreakers from Stormzy, Normani, Dave, D-Block Europe and a resurgent Lil Nas X.

Most surprising of all must be a TOTP return for Ozzy Osbourne, alongside his good friend Post Malone. In a week of turmoil, the only certainty is that King Ed Sheeran still reigns at the top.

Once again more than half the line-up this week is britrap and related music - 2019 has really been the year for it. Meanwhile Post Malone seems to have abandoned US-rap for the moment, dropping in at number 11 with a soft rock song instead.

In other genres, Rita Ora fronts Jonas Blue's dance ditty as it reaches a new high position, and chart behemoth Lewis Capaldi flies the flag for hoary balladeering.

She's been killing it all year under the radar, but this is actually the first week that Lizzo's had the chart power to get on Top of the Pops. She's here and as ebullient as you'd expect.

In other news, we get a couple of round-ups of some lower-down hits thanks to three-song medleys from Drake and new friend of the show Aitch. And with Shawn Mendes unavailable, it falls to Stormzy to serenade Camila Cabello in the top position.

As the summer of britrap rolls on, this time it's Dave and Young T and Bugsey who are heading back up the charts, alongside a new entry from Krept and Konan. It's great that all these MCs are happy to support the show, rubbing shoulders with (and often outcharting) the likes of Camila Cabello and Justin Bieber, who guests with Billie Eilish this week.

One week off the top was enough for King Ed Sheeran, though, so now he's back at the top with the next song in the queue, the fairly lovely Beautiful People, alongside fellow friend of the show Khalid.

There's a lot of polite shuffling about in the chart this week, which gives us the opportunity to showcase a few hits that have been bubbling under for a while: Dominic Fike, Camila Cabello and Martin Garrix are the beneficiaries.

The Glastonbury effect has been pretty muted this year but the Killers are back in the chart. The summer of britrap continues with an entry from Young T and Bugsey, plus last week's debutant Aitch making it two weeks on TOTP in a row, and the biggest chart movement comes from King Ed Sheeran, whose Beautiful People (aided by friend of the show Khalid) joins I Don't Care (this week co-performed by Lewis Capaldi) in the top five.

The biggest beneficiary is of course King Ed Sheeran; this week he invites friend of the show Jess Glynne to fill in for Bieber in a nice exclusive.

Top of the Pops, 14th March 2019

It's another great week for heartfelt singer-songwriters: Tom Walker is able to perform a two-song medley of chart climbers, and Lewis Capaldi not only makes it two weeks at the top but also sees most of his other songs climb the chart in the wake of Someone You Loved. And do the Jonas Brothers count? They have the highest new entry.

In other news, friends of the show Little Mix at last manage to get on to perform Think About Us after six weeks climbing the chart, and their rent-a-rapper Ty Dolla $ign has another hit to perform as well. Mabel's chart run shows no sign of flagging - wonder if she'll make number 1 at some point? We're over a week into January but the chart is still in retrospective mode, a clearout of Christmas hits making way for some of 2018's biggest tracks to climb back up the chart. There is some fresh material, though: Ariana Grande and Post Malone both have lower-charting companions to their bigger hits, and Jax Jones and kiddie deities Pinkfong both take slow-burning hits to new chart peaks.

The biggest story, though, is Ava Max, who capped off a long chart climb with a jump to number 1 just after Christmas and isn't ready to give up the top spot just yet.

Fantasy Top of the Pops 2018 round-up

A very happy new year, everybody!

I'll keep this intro brief because I'm actually writing it in late 2019, having fallen somewhat off the fantasy TOTP pace. Let's hope we're back up to date in time for 2020.

But that aside, let's run down the most featured artistes for 2018.

In tenth place with ten appearances is Post Malone. Postie is becoming a bit of a chart phenomenon and his hits tend to be very persistent. He'd be ranked higher if he wasn't US-based and so often unable to make it to the TOTP studio.

In joint seventh place with eleven appearances is Cardi B. The highest ranked newcomer, Cardi had features on hits by Maroon 5, Bruno Mars, DJ Snake and Rita Ora, plus one of her own, and scores higher than any of her collaborators.

Also in joint seventh place with eleven appearances is Anne-Marie. This is the consistent hitmaker's best TOTP year to date, seeing hits in her own right as well as collaborations with James Arthur and a couple of DJs.

And also in joint seventh place with eleven appearances is Ariana Grande. Any Grande release seems destined to zoom to the top, and she finished the year strongly with a long stretch at number 1, only deposed at the last moment by the sausage roll thing.

In sixth place with twelve appearances is Jess Glynne. After a silent 2017, Glynne came back stronger than ever with several high-charting anthems and a number 1 collaboration with Rudimental.

In joint third place with thirteen appearances is Khalid. Perhaps a surprise inclusion here, Khalid is another performer whose hits stick around longer than most. He had a hit of his own, a duet with Normani and the number 1 collaboration with Benny Blanco, all featured multiple times.

Also in joint third place with thirteen appearances is George Ezra. No stranger to the TOTP studio, George had several hits, all on his own, notably the number 1 summer anthem Shotgun.

And also in joint third place with thirteen appearances is Calvin Harris. Of course Calvin has a bulletproof chart pedigree and would have had even more appearances if he wasn't often busy DJing in Vegas of wherever, leaving his featured vocalists to perform without him.

In joint first place with sixteen appearances is Dua Lipa. Yes, we have a joint number 1 here and half of the duo is Dua. Significantly helped by her Calvin Harris collaboration being the biggest number 1 of the year, she was all over the show in the first three quarters of the year before taking a break in Q4. If you add 2017 and 2018, she scores higher than any other artist.

And our other co-number 1, also with sixteen appearances, is Drake. Even though his last appearance was in August, Drake managed to rack up 16 appearances by zooming to the top of the chart with almost everything he released, particularly the nine-week number 1 God's Plan.

And now let's look at the all-time Fantasy TOTP top appearers:

1 Ed Sheeran (60)
2 Little Mix (47)
3 Clean Bandit (39)
4 Calvin Harris (38)
5 Drake (36)
6 Dua Lipa (35)
= Ariana Grande (35)
8 Jess Glynne (33)
9 Sam Smith (32)
10 Rita Ora (30)
11 George Ezra (28)
== Zara Larsson (28)
== Ellie Goulding (28)
14 Justin Bieber (26)
15 Coldplay (25)
16 Anne-Marie (24)
== Jason Derulo (24)
== Major Lazer (24)
19 Camila Cabello (22)
== The Weeknd (22)
== One Direction (22)

Still no challengers to King Ed, but Little Mix and Clean Bandit have closed the gap slightly. New arrivals to watch include Anne-Marie and Camila Cabello, and One Direction cling on for another year despite having split up. Of course if you added up all their solo figures the total would be a lot higher.
