Top of the Pops, 16th January 2025

In contrast to last week, chart climbers are few and far between. That means that apart from the still uncatchable Gracie Abrams, only one top ten song is featured: the resurgent Jimin.

The Barbie chart domination is now almost at pre-Christmas Christmas song levels - half of this week's line-up comes from the multi-platform entertainment phenomenon. Three songs crash the top five, although they still can't shift Dave and Central Cee from the very top.

The biggest non-Barbie offering is the new Travis Scott album, and he is here to perform a three-song sampler. Calvin Harris and Sam Smith have also teamed up again, and we pay tribute to Sinead O'Connor.

There are some huge leaps on the chart this week, not least from Pinkpantheress who enlists Ice Spice to give her song the top ten placing it deserves. There are also impressive jumps from dependable names George Ezra and Pink (her first appearance in a while), while Coi LeRay and a rebounding Sam Smith make smaller inroads.

We have to go all the way down to number 57 to find a new entry, though - welcome back, Rita Ora. Miley is looking very comfortable at number 1, and she brings along Olly Murs this week for a fun exclusive performance.

After several weeks of mostly slow climbers, today sees fireworks as three songs zoom straight into the top ten: friends of the show Little Mix, KSI, and right at the top Ariana Grande making her big return.

That pushes a lot of other songs downwards, meaning we're also able to feature several acts from lower down the top 40, including a rare sighting of actual guitars in the hands of Bring Me The Horizon. Central Cee makes his debut, and there are welcome pop-ins from Jax Jones and Sam Smith.

Top of the Pops, 22nd October 2020

It's pop week on Top of the Pops, as a precipitous fall by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion allows other songs that had been holding steady to all move up a bit, meaning that almost the entire top ten gets featured on the show. That means Paul Woolford, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Derulo and another new high for Tate McRae, plus a huge posse cut medley from Headie One and his compadres.

Lower down the chart Sam Smith makes further inroads, while we're played out by another medley as friends of the show Clean Bandit join 24KGoldn for an exclusive reimagining of his two current hits.

Debuts: None.

24KGolden and Iann Dior take the fateful final step and find themselves at the top of the chart this week, displacing Megan and Cardi. The biggest new entry comes from Justin Bieber, and he has competition in the megastar stakes from the international sensations BTS.

More downbeatly, we've also got another posthumous hit from Pop Smoke, who's been having big hits the whole time but can hardly be featured week in week out. Sam Smith has a big new entry with low-key banger Diamonds, and Jason Derulo and Sigala are at least adequate ways to round out the show.

It's a very quiet chart in some ways, but there's a decent number of new entries stretching from the top to the bottom of the top 40. From slow-burning new arrivals like Gerry Cinnamon, to new stuff from established stars like Sam Smith, to a double bill of blockbuster reactions to the pandemic from the Live Lounge Allstars and the thoroughly good egg Captain Tom Moore.

In fact the only non-new entry comes from friends of the show Little Mix, performing a lovely exclusive version of Break Up Song in split-screen acapella.

She's been killing it all year under the radar, but this is actually the first week that Lizzo's had the chart power to get on Top of the Pops. She's here and as ebullient as you'd expect.
