A couple of big album releases influence the TOTP lineup this week. There's Silk Sonic, who perform two of their lovely classic RnB jams for us, and there's Taylor Swift's rights reclamation, which gives us our highest new entry. In addition to that there are debuts for Gayle and Acraze, the latest single from friends of the show Little Mix, and another posthumous hit for Juice WRLD (obviously we show the video).

Last week it was Kanye West, this week it's Drake: three songs crash into the top ten. But that's not even the biggest news story of the week, because none other than ABBA have reformed to be welcomed into the TOTP studio.

With all that upheaval, almost no one else is climbing the chart, which means we take a deep dive and unearth some gems from lower down. That means the new solo single from Charli XCX, a debut appearance for Sam Fender, Dermot Kennedy's first showing since January, and the duet between Willow (Smith) and Tyler Cole. King Ed Sheeran is back, and his chart position could probably have been predicted: Olivia Rodrigo's seemingly immovable object finally meets the true irresistible force. Less predictable this year has been the runaway success of Maneskin, who are back with their third hit this week and also guest with friends of the show Little Mix for a rockin' heartbreak anthem.

Tones & I has been in the chart's lower reaches for a while, so it's good to be able to feature her current single. There's also a debut for Jonasu and a classy trio of new entries from Aitch, Tyler the Creator and Doja Cat.

What will be this year's summer anthem? At the moment it looks likely to be by Olivia Rodrigo, who completely dominates the chart and indeed the show this week with three top ten hits at once. However, there's also a strong rest-of-the-world contingent here: BTS from Korea, Maneskin from Italy and indeed the barely perceptible Galantis on the Little Mix hit.

The bookers dip way down the chart this week, featuring rare outside-the-top-40 hits from Nicki Minaj and (gasp) Elton John, and there's also room for new face Bella Poarch. All the Christmas songs suddenly disappear into the ether, leaving room for some monster climbs by the rest of them. The resulting line-up is more or less a who's who of anyone who's anyone: Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa, Queen Ariana Grande (performing most of her album), Taylor Swift. They are ably supplemented by some chart favourites from the second half of 2020 in Tate McRae, Meduza and KSI.

Perhaps the most surprising climb of all is the Little Mix song, which leaps the eight places needed to hit the top almost out of nowhere. They give an ebullient performance, and give us a bit of their (so far) more minor hit No Time For Tears as an encore.

It's a strange chart this week, as many Christmas faves get one last kick up the chart even as the pine-scented magic fades, while long runners from last year rub shoulders with hopefuls for 2021. Amid all that, Asian Dub Foundation and Stewart Lee are an entirely unexpected presence.

The glorious and ludicrously belated number 1 from Wham! aside, the editorial decision is to concentrate on non-Christmas material here, so there's room for friends of the show Miley Cyrus and Dua Lipa, alongside bright young things CJ, Shane Codd and Kid Laroi. All this and the return of Ed Sheeran.

Taylor Swift's album arrives, placing three new songs in the upper reaches and pushing most other tracks down accordingly, which means opportunities for a couple of climbers in the lower reaches: Tom Walker and Dua Lipa are both delighted to appear. Taylor herself brings us an impassioned remote rendition of Cardigan.

Swifty doesn't have the highest new entry, though. That honour goes to men of the moment Nathan Dawe and KSI, who appear in split screen. Friends of the show Little Mix also place well with their newest release, and MNEK and Joel Corry hold on at number 1.

There's not as much variation in genre as usual here: Drake's album release and high-profile guest star remixes by Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion spearhead the hip-hop charge and don't leave room for too much else. On the plus side, the ritzy cameos from Beyonce downwards are all happy to Zoom-chat on to the show - it's not like they're doing much else.

On the British side of things the likeable Simba reaches a new chart peak and friends of the show Little Mix are on call with hairbrush mics and lippy. JP Saxe and Julia Michaels's lockdown-friendly anthem continues to climb as well.
