Top of the Pops, 11th July 2019

There's a lot of polite shuffling about in the chart this week, which gives us the opportunity to showcase a few hits that have been bubbling under for a while: Dominic Fike, Camila Cabello and Martin Garrix are the beneficiaries.

The Glastonbury effect has been pretty muted this year but the Killers are back in the chart. The summer of britrap continues with an entry from Young T and Bugsey, plus last week's debutant Aitch making it two weeks on TOTP in a row, and the biggest chart movement comes from King Ed Sheeran, whose Beautiful People (aided by friend of the show Khalid) joins I Don't Care (this week co-performed by Lewis Capaldi) in the top five.

Debuts: Dominic Fike, Patrick Stump (without Fall Out Boy)

So far this year it's mostly been the Ed Sheeran show, but while this week's TOTP contains a certain amount of Ed, the week really belongs to Stormzy. His entire album has invaded the chart so he treats us to three tracks here, and also pops up at the end of the show for his feature on the Sheeran remix.

It's a little surprising that a new Calvin Harris track is the week's second or third biggest story, but he's here, undaunted, with all his collaborators (including a low-key TOTP debut for the feted Frank Ocean). We also have friends of the show Little Mix and Dua Lipa, another appearance from Rag 'N' Bone Man, and some solid numbers-making-up from Maroon 5.

Debuts: Frank Ocean, Ghetts, J Hus

Calvin Harris ft. Frank Ocean and Migos - Slide

Top of the Pops, 9th February 2017

We've a bit of a departure this week, as for the first time in history Top Of The Pops DOESN'T PLAY THE NUMBER ONE SONG! Sales of smelling salts rocket across the UK. There is a good reason, though - Ed Sheeran has had the number 1 and 2 slots tied up for a month so it's about time Castle On The Hill, which could sort of be considered a co-number 1 in a way, got its moment in the spotlight.

What else? Well, Dua Lipa is all over the chart at the moment. She follows up last week's two-song medley with a guest spot on the Martin Garrix record, and also fills in for Taylor Swift alongside ZAYN on an exclusive version of the 50 Shades problemato-pop behemoth.

We've also got a reprise from Clean Bandit, who are climbling the chart once more, a big new Major Lazer track, and plenty more lively stuff that you may or may not have heard of.

Debuts: PARTYNEXTDOOR

Major Lazer ft. PARTYNEXTDOOR and Nicki Minaj - Run Up

Highest New Entry - In at number 20

Migos - Bad And Boujee

Up 3 to number 31

Top of the Pops, 29th September 2016

The way the chart works nowadays means that five of the songs performed on the show two weeks ago now return to the show - more than half the line-up. To keep things fresh, most of the artistes in question change up their arrangements, including a lovely candlelight performance from friend of the show Ellie Goulding and a reggaeton remix from Grande and Minaj with a cameo from the legendary Don Omar.

It's not all continuity, though - there are big returns from megastars Calvin Harris and Emeli Sande, and the slow burner from Matoma and Becky Hill finally rises high enough to make the cut in its eighth week on the chart.

Debuts: Matoma, Don Omar.

Martin Garrix ft. Bebe Rexha - In The Name Of Love

Up 1 to number 10

Emeli Sande - Hurts

In at number 22

Top of the Pops, 15th September 2016

The Chainsmokers hold on at the top, heading up an almost motionless top ten. One of the few climbers in the upper reaches is Shawn Mendes, who dodges the feminist picket line to perform his dubiously reasoned track once again.

The big news, though, is that Lil Wayne's track from Suicide Squad is still inching up the chart and as if in answer to MRA Mendes, Weezy has invited an all-female posse for a super-charged TOTP exclusive. Hold on to your hats.

Debuts: Offaiah.

Ariana Grande ft. Nicki Minaj - Side To Side

The exclusives keep on coming. Lil Wayne's posse cut from Suicide Squad is climbing the chart once more so he combs the studio for extra vocalists and ends up with a one-off feat. Craig David, Sean Paul and Ellie Goulding. Wow. Craig David cannot contain himself and so lends his vocals to Major Lazer's number one hit as well, in Justin Bieber's absence.

There's a rare appearance from Sia, another resurfacing of the Puth and Gomez hit, and a nice run-out for relative newcomer Anne-Marie.

Debuts: None.

Top of the Pops, 18th August 2016

Double Bieber today, as Justin has both the number one single AND the highest new entry (alongside DJ Snake). Not sure if anyone's ever done that before with two different songs. There's double as well as the co-number 1er has her own Final Song climbing the chart.

The rest of this week's line-up is fairly varied, featuring dance from TIEKS, leftfield pop from Christine and the Queens, centrefield pop from Fifth Harmony, and the entire line-up of that song from the Suicide Squad film - incidentally giving the icon Lil Wayne his TOTP debut.

Something for everyone here: a few old friends, a few new friends, a couple of exclusives. With Justin Bieber absent, his former associate Selena Gomez fills in the cut-up vocals on Where Are U Now, and the often-available Jessie J does similar duty for Martin Garrix. Derulo holds on at the top, though he can't make the studio this week so we play the video.

Rare appearances ahoy. This week we have a rare appearance from Sia, a rare appearance from Usher, a rare transatlantic visit from Ariana Grande, and a rare appearance from mister number one, Jason Derulo. Lots of American (based) acts in the chart just now, so it's nice that they're happy to come over and perform for us.

Europe is well-represented too, by young Martin Garrix, Avicii and Mans Zelmerlow. Would you believe the only Brit on the show this week is Rita Ora? Or perhaps Parson James is British too, not sure.

Some real show-stoppers this week. We have Robbie Williams in full naval uniform, Gaga AND R Kelly performing their entry, international big name Celine Dion, and a rather special co-interpretation from Lily Allen and Keane, who both have versions of the same song climbing the top 40. All this and Martin Garrix, who brings a whole farmyard full of animals (people in onesies) to help him celebrate outselling the lot of 'em.
