Top of the Pops, 30th January 2025

Just like that, after a slow start, the 2025 chart picture explodes into colour. There's a richly deserved new number 1 from Lola Young, a big new entry for Central Cee, and exciting chart climbers from Doechii and Sam Barber. Plus a double header from international megastar Bad Bunny.

Sam Fender is also coming back up the chart, though his singles success doesn't yet match the size of his media profile or the live crowds he plays to. There's still a bit of 2024 continuity as well, from two of the artists of last year, Gracie Abrams and Teddy Swims.

Top of the Pops, 9th January 2025

Happy 2025 and we start with the strangest chart of the year, when all the Christmas songs melt away like snow, making way for a top ten best summarised as "bangers from the last four months". That means a high-quality show with Gigi Perez, Teddy Swims and Gracie Abrams and others all lined up to reprise their pre-Christmas hits.

Amid all that, there's a new entry for Ella Henderson, while Lola Young may have the most potential of the just-before-Christmas bubbler-unders.

Debuts: None.

Incredible scenes this week as the number 1 single is... not Sabrina Carpenter! Instead it's Gigi Perez, capping off one of the more impressive chart climbs of the year with (at least) a week at the very top. Sabrina is not to be defeated completely though, as newer hit Bed Chem is looming ominously in the lower reaches of the top ten.

Other big news includes a big new entry from Lady Gaga, and the release of Tyler the Creator's album, sampled here with two choice tracks. Addison Rae doubles up as well, adding new hit Aquamarine to the still-climbing Diet Pepsi.

Top of the Pops, 5th September 2024

This week, more than any yet, belongs to Sabrina Carpenter. Her third release in a row breezes into the number 1 slot, and the other two swarm up behind it leaving everyone else to battle it out for fourth. She performs a charming medley of all three year-defining songs on the show.

The rest of the chart sees a lot of downward shuffling, which means that the viewers get a deep dive into the lower reaches, with pretty interesting results. There's the new single from Coldplay, a quietly building old cover version by Disturbed, and a debut from Alex Warren. Oasis are in the From The Vault slot, and Billie Eilish and a stripped-down version of Free by just Ellie Goulding round out the line-up.

Top of the Pops, 6th June 2024

The 2024 trend of rootsiness continues, with Zach Bryan entering the chart and a double performance from the man who might have started it all (?), Teddy Swims. Some variation is provided by Bring Me The Horizon's metalish rock and Central Cee's mid-Atlantic rap sound, plus Billie Eilish with another song from her album following the double bill last week.

None of that multifarious authenticity, however, can dislodge the incongruously breezy Sabrina Carpenter from number 1. Five weeks now!

Top of the Pops, 28th March 2024

It's quite a male line-up this week, with only Ava Max flying the female flag - even the first lady of country and western Beyonce has been knocked off the top spot in favour of Benson Boone and his questionable gender politics. Still, there are fairly storming performances from hoary growlers Teddy Swims and Rag 'N' Bone Man, and a more polished offering from V.

Noah Kahan makes a surprise return to the show, and the show is somewhat stolen by none other than Mark Knopfler and a stage full of six-string virtuosi.

Top of the Pops, 29th February 2024

Divas upon divas this week. Friend of the show Dua Lipa has the highest new entry, Ariana Grande recruits Mariah Carey for a double diva version of her big-but-not-yet-huge comeback hit, and --yee haw!-- it's country diva Beyonce at number 1.

On the other side of things there's a big return for Calvin Harris and Rag 'N' Bone Man (the latter's first appearance in a couple of years) as well as a couple of debuts and yet another new peak for Teddy Swims. Can he get to the top two? The From The Vault slot is for Bob Marley, as the recent biopic sparks renewed interest in his evergreen catalogue; Could You Be Loved? in particular is a nice choice.

Given their ubiquity just lately it would be a bit of a shock if the Last Dinner Party weren't on Top of the Pops - but here they are to open the show. Just pipping them as a high climber, though, is YG Marley, so he could be one to watch.

Megan Thee Stallion completes a trio of new entries, complementing some of the bigger hits from last year from Casso, Tate McRae and Sonny Fodera which take their 2023 momentum into a second month. But once again the week belongs to Noah Kahan, though the story of the year so far Teddy Swims is gaining on him.
