Top of the Pops, 16th November 2023

After the deep cuts of last week, this week sees a lot of movement in the top ten, meaning that we catch up with long-running hits from Casso (a sweet candlelight version this week), Tyla and Tate McRae. International superstar Jung Kook is also resurgent, and Olivia Rodrigo hits the top 20 with yet another new track.

Longtime friend of the show Zara Larsson makes a welcome appearance, but of course the top spot is reserved for the Fab Four: Ringo appears in the studio to introduce a video montage.

At last, they've done it. Assisted by the accelerated chart ratio, Rudimental and friends make the one small step up to number 1, appearing with a carnival-type performance and big grins on their faces.

Aside from that it's mostly a rundown of faves from the last few weeks, the exception being the suspiciously smooth Shawn Mendes, in at number 13. Of note are the double-header marking the release of George Ezra's album, and the way Florida Georgia Line seem to be becoming unlikely TOTP regulars.

The oddball is Stormzy's Blinded By Your Grace from before Christmas, which provides a nice break from the madness.

Grime and film continue to be the twin sounds of 2018: this week it's Kojo Funds representing the former, and Liam and Rita for the latter - though they only get through a verse and a chorus before Rita barges Liam off the stage and launches into a spirited rendition of the far superior Anywhere.

We also have the quietly very successful song from Jax Jones and Ina Wroldsen, the rather blunt new lyric from Anne-Marie, and a whole bunch of people crammed on to the stage with Hailee Steinfeld. Drake looks very cool at number 1 (and number 23 too).

Debuts: Florida Georgia Line, Andrew Watt, Blocboy JB.

SMASH! King Ed Sheeran's run at number 1 is over, and who else should do the deed but our other leading chart wizard, Drake? He comes straight in at the top.

There is grime all over the rest of the show, with Steel Banglez, Yungen, Mostack, Not3s, Mabel and J Hus representing the best of British youth. Some contrast is provided by Portugal The Man's peppy number, and the US is represented by G-Eazy, Halsey and a French Montana double hit.

After last week's best-of-2017 feel, this week brings a fair few new hits. Ramz completes a long trek to the top 5, and there are big new entries from Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, and Liam and Rita from the new 50 Shades soundtrack.

There's also the open-to-question pairing of Craig David and Bastille, and for a bit of variety King Ed gets Andrea Bocelli in to do the faux-classical version of Perfect.

Great news: Justin Bieber is here to do his verse on immovable number 1 Despacito! Because he has another hit alongside David Guetta, who's also here, bouncing up and down behind the decks. Camila Cabello appears once again, this time alongside Major Lazer, and Ed Sheeran happens to have a song climbing the chart, the slightly neglected Castle On The Hill, so he's here too.

The Puerto Rico contingent are still bringing the fiesta to the number 1 spot, though the last remaining One Directioner Liam Payne runs them close-ish with his new Sheeran-penned, Sheeran-alike, I-can't-believe-it's-not-Sheeran track Strip That Down.

Other than that it's US solo starlets alternating with the producer-plus-feature production line; Cheat Codes and Demi Lovato even tick both boxes. Needless to say Ariana Grande isn't in the studio, but we play a tribute video to accompany her re-entry One Last Time.

Debuts: Liam Payne (as solo).

Top of the Pops, 18th May 2017

It's common to see credited producers doing well in the chart these days, and this week three make it on to the show: Martin Solveig, Martin Jensen and Jonas Blue. The trio each stand around moodily while their vocalists perform the songs, and then celebrate by teaming up on an exclusive housed-up version of Lady Gaga's The Cure (they take a chorus each).

We also have pop, rap, whatever Niall Horan is and the sound of the summer, reggaeton. Yes, Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi (for it is they) have taken their Spanish-language hit to the very top, though it's largely thanks to the anglophone presence of Justin Bieber, who's good enough to come into the studio and help out on the remix in person.

Debuts:
