The big new hit this week is from Billie Eilish, who just misses out on dethroning Queen Ariana Grande but makes significant waves none the less. Also new to the show is CJ, who makes his big chart charge after hovering around the lower reaches for a few weeks.

James Arthur is never off the show lately and this week is no exception. Another of the stories of the year, 24KGolden, is also here to reprise his big hit, and Baccara are dug up out of the vault for some reason.

More reflectively, Shawn Mendes reappears with Wonder, and friend of the show Dua Lipa is levitating back up the chart with more of her future-nostalgic sounds.

More downbeatly, we've also got another posthumous hit from Pop Smoke, who's been having big hits the whole time but can hardly be featured week in week out. Sam Smith has a big new entry with low-key banger Diamonds, and Jason Derulo and Sigala are at least adequate ways to round out the show.

Well. With concerts, events and gatherings of all kinds being cancelled, Top of the Pops errs on the side of prudence and does the (almost) unthinkable: drops the studio. Instead we get a mix of archive footage (The Weeknd), concert footage (Eminem) and jolly low-fi Skype-type pop-ins (Dua Lipa, the welcome return of Anne-Marie, Da Beatfreakz in a multi-window Zoom-style scenario).

The week's relatively rich crop of debutants will have to wait for their big studio moments, but it can't be helped.
