We've found three non-Christmas hits to open the show with this week: Zara Larsson is randomly back in the chart, Olivia Dean cannot be defeated even by Santa, and Sonny Fodera is doing remarkably well, though still barged out of the top 50.

After that it's wall-to-wall tinsel, with a new one from Gwen Stefani, another four-oldie round-up, a modern classic from Leona Lewis and even an appearance from King Ed Sheeran. Wham! process imperiously to the top spot, as is their right.

Top of the Pops, 4th September 2025

If anything might overshadow the K-Pop Demon Hunters megastory it's surely got to be the return of Rihanna - only at number 40, but still. Charting higher and maybe arguably even a bigger star these days is Doja Cat, and Olivia Dean, with older hit Dive this time, makes it sort of three generations of pop queens.

Drake isn't here this week but his collaborator Central Cee delivers an exclusive solo version of Which One, there's the first sighting of Stray Kids in a couple of years, and King Ed Sheeran pops up too.

Just a bit lower down, Drake continues his impressive record of high chart entries, and we also have new hits by recent chart phenom Sombr and Miss Messy Lola Young.

There's a strong international flavour to the line-up this week: Lorde from New Zealand, CMAT from Ireland, the Demon Hunters from Korea, Alex Warren from the US and Rose from Korea (again). Presiding over all, though perhaps not the chart force he once was, is the UK's own King Ed Sheeran.

Scotland does pretty well too, with friend of the show Lewis Capaldi topping the chart and Calvin Harris also turning out. And here's Olivia Dean for the third week in a row: summer of Dean!

The good times continue to roll for Alex Warren: not only does he make it to eleven weeks at number 1, he also has the highest new entry with another song! Chappell Roan bobs back up to number 2 again but you feel it will take something more to dislodge Mr Warren.

Lower down the top 40 King Ed Sheeran continues his low-key album campaign, and there are some interesting debuts and another hit for 2025's most likely lad, Myles Smith. Between MGK and Alex Warren's collaborator Jelly Roll, it's a good week for unhealthy looking Americans. Tate McRae is on the show again also, battling her way into the public consciousness by force of will.

Christmastide is rising, so this week only sees three unrelated performances before the jollity kicks in. What a trio they are though: behemoth of ballad Lewis Capaldi, the hot sizzler from Metro Boomin' and reborn pop princess RAYE almost keeping Mariah herself off the top.

Almost! But the week belongs to the elves, with Ed Sheeran reprising his instant Christmas classic from last year, an oldie from the late Chris Rea, a newie from Lizzo, and even Paul McCartney dropping in like King Wenceslas to deliver the flesh, wine and pine logs of Wonderful Christmastime in person.
