Top of the Pops, 30th January 2025

Just like that, after a slow start, the 2025 chart picture explodes into colour. There's a richly deserved new number 1 from Lola Young, a big new entry for Central Cee, and exciting chart climbers from Doechii and Sam Barber. Plus a double header from international megastar Bad Bunny.

Sam Fender is also coming back up the chart, though his singles success doesn't yet match the size of his media profile or the live crowds he plays to. There's still a bit of 2024 continuity as well, from two of the artists of last year, Gracie Abrams and Teddy Swims.

Top of the Pops, 15th December 2022

Christmastide is rising, so this week only sees three unrelated performances before the jollity kicks in. What a trio they are though: behemoth of ballad Lewis Capaldi, the hot sizzler from Metro Boomin' and reborn pop princess RAYE almost keeping Mariah herself off the top.

Almost! But the week belongs to the elves, with Ed Sheeran reprising his instant Christmas classic from last year, an oldie from the late Chris Rea, a newie from Lizzo, and even Paul McCartney dropping in like King Wenceslas to deliver the flesh, wine and pine logs of Wonderful Christmastime in person.

Big new entries from Drake and to a lesser extent Beyonce have pushed most of the other songs down the chart, so we have to delve a long way to find performers - but we strike gold with fresh tracks from Doja Cat and a triumphantly returning Chase and Status.

It's pretty dance-heavy this week even apart from Beyonce's bandwagon jump: Sigala reach a new peak with their latest hit and LF System inch their way into the top three. Tom Grennan will please fans of more singer-songwriterly material.

The bookers dip way down the chart this week, featuring rare outside-the-top-40 hits from Nicki Minaj and (gasp) Elton John, and there's also room for new face Bella Poarch. More regular guests include friends of the show Little Mix and Dua Lipa, plus Tion Wayne and Russ Millions in their third week at number 1.

But the chart excitement comes from four new entries: three from J Cole, plus a retinue of guest stars, and a follow-up from Olivia Rodrigo that almost matches the incredible peak of her first hit.

After Post Malone's solo turn last week, it's his co-performer 21 Savage's turn to show that Post isn't the only one making bank from their mega-hit. 21 gives us an exclusive performance of rockstar plus one of his solo tracks from lower down the chart. We also have an unusual collabo-swap from friends of the show Little Mix and Ed Sheeran, the Mixers providing gorgeous backup harmonies on Perfect and Ed handling the CNCO Spanish bits on Reggaeton Lento surprisingly well (but still not that well).

Pink is doing well with her newly released album, and the tracks of the moment from Mabel, Khaled and Rita Ora round out the line-up. Plus Charlie Puth.

All hail Post Malone, and indeed 21 Savage, as they take the final step to settle in the number 1 spot. Also breaking new ground are Chris and Kem and Mabel (with Kojo Funds) all making their TOTP debuts.

Ed Sheeran is back after a little while away with a two-song medley, but as touching as Perfect is, the show's real moment is the classic Tom Petty performance, shown in remembrance of the great man.

New material comes from highest new entrants Post Malone and 21 Savage, plus Niall Horan, while P!nk stops the show with a show-stopping acoustic version of her show-stopper What About Us.
