It's a big week for chart climbers. Not only do we have the annual Christmas song invasion, but returning friend of the show The Weeknd leapfrogs all of them, and Ellie Goulding has been pretty nifty too.

Christmas is represented by an old performance from Wham! and an in-person appearance by Ariana Grande. And with many of the acts climbing the chart being from the 70s, Trevor Daniel is able to sneak himself an invitation from number 40.

The britrap train just doesn't stop: four new entries this week, from the returning KSI and serial hitmakers J Hus, Fredo and Dave, and Dave does a double performance because one of his older hits is climbing back up the chart as well.

On the sung side of things we have that nice Niall Horan as well as Maroon 5, and nothing can shift Tones & I from the top.

Another week, another Diplo supergroup. This time it's Silk City who crash the chart thanks mainly to Dua Lipa, although co-producer Mark Ronson isn't actually hereo on the show.

The two biggest songs of the moment, though, come from friend of the show Camila Cabello and our number 1 artiste Post Malone. Post brings us an album sampler as he has a ton of tracks in the chart just now.

So far this year it's mostly been the Ed Sheeran show, but while this week's TOTP contains a certain amount of Ed, the week really belongs to Stormzy. His entire album has invaded the chart so he treats us to three tracks here, and also pops up at the end of the show for his feature on the Sheeran remix.

It's a little surprising that a new Calvin Harris track is the week's second or third biggest story, but he's here, undaunted, with all his collaborators (including a low-key TOTP debut for the feted Frank Ocean). We also have friends of the show Little Mix and Dua Lipa, another appearance from Rag 'N' Bone Man, and some solid numbers-making-up from Maroon 5.

Which songs have been rebounding up the chart in the new year lull? It's a fairly healthy mix of US party tracks and friends of the show, with the occasional 2016 fave thrown in for good measure. Stars, stars everywhere this week. Mars, Bieber, Grande, Minaj, even Kendrick Lamar pops up for his feature on the weirdly persistent Maroon 5 track. Friend of the show The Weeknd is also here and brings his confreres Daft Punk with him... or does he? It's hard to tell with those masks.

Mannequin challenge guys Rae Sremmurd are here too, and there's a real treat at number 1: Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj invade the Clean Bandit song, making a supercharged exclusive concoction of the kind you can only find on TOTP.

Little Mix remain triumphant at number 1 this week, which gives them the chance to drop in a bit of their new song You Gotta Not as well as the all-conquering Shout Out To My Ex. The biggest new tracks are by X-Factor winner Lousia Johnson, who seems to be getting into gear now, and faceless dance magician Jonas Blue.

Three big names give oomph to the line-up: in roughly ascending order there's another slick turn by Bruno Mars, a double-header of Drake's latest material, and a nice Halloween From The Vault slot for Michael Jackson. We've also got Maroon 5 and Galantis.

Lots of action this week. Little Mix splurge in at the top of the chart, but that's not all - jaws drop as Drake and Rihanna, who are always in the chart, actually pop into the studio to perform two of their streaming perennials. And a slow chart week also gives niche heritage act the Kings of Leon the chance to come along and show what they can do.

Manic energy is provided by the Vamps, Galantis, Maroon 5 and to a lesser extent Fifth Harmony, and Neiked continue to make impressive strides - top ten next week?

In the absence of Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson backs up the living legend that is Dappy. In the presence of two top 40 climbers, Sia gives an arty mashup of them both.
