Top of the Pops, 2nd December 2021

The Adele album is out, and she is good enough to give us a bit of the top three tracks from it to close the show this week. Between that and the sudden onset of Christmas music, current chart climbers are few and far between, which gives Lost Frequencies a chance to get on the show after seven weeks in the lower reaches.

Friend of the show Anne-Marie and Niall Horan have a nice new entry with the Children In Need song, and D-Block Europe hit their highest chart placing to date. Justin Bieber and especially Imagine Dragons are featured for the first time in a while. And we have a very special in-person Mariah Carey performance with a couple of guest stars.

Top of the Pops, 28th October 2021

What a week for new releases. Not only does Adele glide serenely to number 1, but there's a new Coldplay album as well. They perform two tracks from it, giving friend of the show Selena Gomez her first appearance in 2021. Last week we had La Di Da, this week it's Uh Oh and Ah Ah Ah. Trendspotters are predicting either Mmhmmm or Oi Oi for Christmas number 1 - but only if it's recorded by King Ed Sheeran, who looks all but immovable. Top of the Pops, 16th September 2021

Last week it was Kanye West, this week it's Drake: three songs crash into the top ten. But that's not even the biggest news story of the week, because none other than ABBA have reformed to be welcomed into the TOTP studio.

With all that upheaval, almost no one else is climbing the chart, which means we take a deep dive and unearth some gems from lower down. That means the new solo single from Charli XCX, a debut appearance for Sam Fender, Dermot Kennedy's first showing since January, and the duet between Willow (Smith) and Tyler Cole. Friends of the show Little Mix are here with their nail-biting first single as a trio, and King Ed Sheeran continues working his way up the all-time number 1s list.

Olivia Rodrigo holds on at the top but there is stiff competition from friend of the show Anne-Marie, as well as the indomitable Ariana Grande, who recruits a couple of the other performers this week for an exclusive deluxe version of 34+35.

The most unexpected appearance here might be the Longest Johns, riding a wave of sea shanty fever. But there's also a debut from Nuka alongside Derulo, and a return appearance from Kid Laroi.

Top of the Pops, 14th January 2021

All the Christmas songs suddenly disappear into the ether, leaving room for some monster climbs by the rest of them. The resulting line-up is more or less a who's who of anyone who's anyone: Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa, Queen Ariana Grande (performing most of her album), Taylor Swift. They are ably supplemented by some chart favourites from the second half of 2020 in Tate McRae, Meduza and KSI.

Perhaps the most surprising climb of all is the Little Mix song, which leaps the eight places needed to hit the top almost out of nowhere. They give an ebullient performance, and give us a bit of their (so far) more minor hit No Time For Tears as an encore.

Debuts: None.

Top of the Pops, 3rd December 2020

It's December and the big guns are coming out. BTS, Mendes and Bieber and Cyrus and Lipa all take their best shots at the chart, although for the moment they are still behind Ariana Grande and also the surprisingly resilient Wes Nelson and Hardy Caprio.

She may have had one of the albums of the year, but we haven't seen that much of friend of the show Dua Lipa on TOTP lately. She puts that right this week, sneaking into the line-up as Hallucinate rises to number 31. Also breaking the surface is Dermot Kennedy, while Simba and Gunna make rather flashier inroads.

Paul Woolford and Diplo have quietly floated up into the top ten so they make a third appearance in six weeks, while Cardi B and Megan remain at the top, glee unabated.

We're still ground to a halt near the top of the chart, so most of the interest is lower down, including a couple of rare invitees from outside the top 40. Not that that means a drop in star power: BTS are a pretty big name after all.

The exception is Eminem (with beyond-the-grave support from Juice WRLD) who crashes in at the top spot. Still got it.
