Top of the Pops, 22nd December 2022

This close to Christmas, it's not that easy to find charting acts that are still extant. So thanks to Leona Lewis and Ariana Grande for dropping by for their annual festive performances. Earlier, it's a bit of a grime extravaganza as Headie One, Bugzy Malone and the Sidemen are clearly soundtracking their fair share of Christmas parties. And well done to SZA for three new entries this week, none of them obviously related to Christmas.

Wham! deservedly take over the holly-and-mistletoe crown from Mariah Carey.

Top of the Pops, 15th December 2022

Christmastide is rising, so this week only sees three unrelated performances before the jollity kicks in. What a trio they are though: behemoth of ballad Lewis Capaldi, the hot sizzler from Metro Boomin' and reborn pop princess RAYE almost keeping Mariah herself off the top.

Almost! But the week belongs to the elves, with Ed Sheeran reprising his instant Christmas classic from last year, an oldie from the late Chris Rea, a newie from Lizzo, and even Paul McCartney dropping in like King Wenceslas to deliver the flesh, wine and pine logs of Wonderful Christmastime in person.

Debuts: Metro Boomin'

Lewis Capaldi - Pointless

As Christmas draws nearer, the show starts to split into two halves. In the current music section there's another new song from Stormzy, plus catch-ups with the big hits from Meghan Trainor and Venbee and Goddard. Top of the Pops, 1st December 2022

Taylor Swift is making a five-week run at the top of the chart look very effortless. At this point her biggest challenger might be Mariah Carey, who glides in at number 18 this week, or even Baddiel and Skinner if results go their way. They are in the From The Vault slot for now but might be tempted to appear in person if they climb higher?

In more normal news we have a very tempting selection of hits from the lower half of the top 40, including a welcome return for friend of the show RAYE and some interesting first appearances.

Debuts: 070 Shake, JVKE, Meekz, Clavish

RAYE ft. 070 Shake - Escapism

JVKE - Golden Hour
