Top of the Pops, 1st April 2021

Justin Bieber launches an assault in earnest, smashing in with three songs, two of which are performed tonight. That causes a lot of other high-up songs to drop down the chart, so we have to go quite deep to fill the show (not that that's a bad thing) - hello James Arthur at number 43!

Nathan Evans holds steady at number 1, and we've got a lively line-up including new face Griff and a double bill from friend of the show Dua Lipa.

The big new hit this week is from Billie Eilish, who just misses out on dethroning Queen Ariana Grande but makes significant waves none the less. Also new to the show is CJ, who makes his big chart charge after hovering around the lower reaches for a few weeks.

James Arthur is never off the show lately and this week is no exception. Another of the stories of the year, 24KGolden, is also here to reprise his big hit, and Baccara are dug up out of the vault for some reason.

Top of the Pops, 19th November 2020

It's a loaded show for pop fans this week. Ariana Grande holds on at number one and also has another highest new entry. Shawn Mendes is back with his new single. And there are microclimbs for longer-running hits from Clean Bandit, Joel Corry and the modern day version of Phats and Small, Sigala.

We've also got a couple of exclusives, as Dermot Kennedy invites Meduza to zazz up Giants in a medley with their collaborative hit, and friends of the show Little Mix provide a gorgeous harmonized backing for Justin Bieber as well as performing their own double bill.

Top of the Pops, 12th November 2020

Another big entry for Ariana Grande this week means that she can perform 34 + 35 as well as her chart topper Positions. Will she make it a threesome next week? There are also minor climbs for the hits of the moment from Miley Cyrus, Wes Nelson and Tate McRae, and a fun appearance from friend of the show Dua Lipa.

Perhaps the most special performance, though, is from the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra (socially distanced, of course). They perform a very touching rendition of the internet phenomenon Four Notes.

Thanks to the way the chart works, it's only this week that the Halloween tracks are charting, hence the presence of Bobby "Boris" Pickett in the From The Vault slot.

Top of the Pops, 29th October 2020

It's all about the Internet Money crew this week, as Gunna and co become one of the more unexpected number 1s of the year in their tenth week on the chart. Wes Nelson and Hardy Caprio seem to be in the middle of a similar climb - will they be next?

We've also got reappearances from Joel Corry and MNEK and Dermot Kennedy, and a new entry from Digga D. International megastars BTS also join a high-quality line-up, and James Arthur mixes in a little bit of his solo hit with the Sigala track.

Top of the Pops, 15th October 2020

We've got several urban-type chartbreakers this week, from Bryson Tiller (with the obligatory Drake feature), Wes Nelson and Hardy Caprio, and most of all an Aitch-assisted D-Block Europe. More reflectively, Shawn Mendes reappears with Wonder, and friend of the show Dua Lipa is levitating back up the chart with more of her future-nostalgic sounds.

24KGoldn and Iann Dior are unmoveable at the top. Sigala and James Arthur are also back.

24KGolden and Iann Dior take the fateful final step and find themselves at the top of the chart this week, displacing Megan and Cardi. The biggest new entry comes from Justin Bieber, and he has competition in the megastar stakes from the international sensations BTS.

More downbeatly, we've also got another posthumous hit from Pop Smoke, who's been having big hits the whole time but can hardly be featured week in week out. Sam Smith has a big new entry with low-key banger Diamonds, and Jason Derulo and Sigala are at least adequate ways to round out the show.

The big hitters of the moment are still clustered in the top five: Headie One and friends, 24KGolden and of course the wicked sisters Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion. Lower down there are some strong climbs from Conan Gray and Tate McRae, and Jason Derulo occupies consecutive places at 11 and 12 so it's medley time for him.

Highest new entry this week is from Sigala and James Arthur, and DJ Khaled and Drake make their second appearance in a few weeks with a massive 50 place jump.

It's a most peculiar chart this week: a completely static top twelve, then several impressive new entries, and some nice climbers all together after that. The biggest beneficiary is of course King Ed Sheeran; this week he invites friend of the show Jess Glynne to fill in for Bieber in a nice exclusive.

We're also delighted to welcome back Katy Perry, and there's a nice britrap contingent as well as the latest relationship wreckage anthem from Lewis Capaldi.

Top of the Pops, 10th January 2019

We're over a week into January but the chart is still in retrospective mode, a clearout of Christmas hits making way for some of 2018's biggest tracks to climb back up the chart. There is some fresh material, though: Ariana Grande and Post Malone both have lower-charting companions to their bigger hits, and Jax Jones and kiddie deities Pinkfong both take slow-burning hits to new chart peaks.

The biggest story, though, is Ava Max, who capped off a long chart climb with a jump to number 1 just after Christmas and isn't ready to give up the top spot just yet.

Top of the Pops, 13th December 2018

The Christmas factor ramps up here, with bids for Christmas number 1 from Mark Ronson and Dalton Castle and even immovable chart colossus Ariana Grande mixing in a bit of Christmas with her performance.

But amid festive fun from Wham! and James Arthur there's also a surprisingly strong showing from the new Meek Mill album, and Ava Max's surprising rise continues. Plus friends of the show Clean Bandit finally get high enough with the very unseasonal Baby to come and perform it. Would you believe this is Marina and the Diamonds's Top of the Pops debut?

Liam Payne has the latest in the unending procession of 1D solo singles, and we have an exclusive double-header from Yxng Bane and Yungen, who are both capital fellows.

The big news, though, is the return of Justin Bieber. Although Dua Lipa impressively prevents him from reaching the very top, this week at least.
