Top of the Pops, 12th September 2024

With Sabrina Carpenter still at the top and the returning Oasis charging into the top ten as well, here's another week where most of the top 40 is nudged down and some of the lower-charting hits get a chance to shine. That means the long-awaited return of friends of the show Clean Bandit, as well as slow climbers from Kid Laroi, Zach Bryan and Benson Boone (by name as well as by nature).

Gigi Perez is here with a reprise of popular word-of-mouth hit Sailor Song, and Billie Eilish gives us another look at the dreamy Birds Of A Feather.

Top of the Pops, 5th September 2024

This week, more than any yet, belongs to Sabrina Carpenter. Her third release in a row breezes into the number 1 slot, and the other two swarm up behind it leaving everyone else to battle it out for fourth. She performs a charming medley of all three year-defining songs on the show.

The rest of the chart sees a lot of downward shuffling, which means that the viewers get a deep dive into the lower reaches, with pretty interesting results. There's the new single from Coldplay, a quietly building old cover version by Disturbed, and a debut from Alex Warren. Oasis are in the From The Vault slot, and Billie Eilish and a stripped-down version of Free by just Ellie Goulding round out the line-up.

Lots of people making moves on the charts this week. There are two big entries from former group members, for Jade (Little Mix) and Jimin (BTS). There are new chart peaks for adult-contemporary trendsetters Myles Smith and Benson Boone. There's a big rush, as the brat summer builds, for Charli XCX. And Billie Eilish hits number 2 and brings along another new track as a bonus.

Central Cee is here with another guest rapper to fill in for Lil Baby. But the most impressive of all is Miss 2024 Sabrina Carpenter, who knocks herself off the top to give Please Please Please a second run to follow the second run of Espresso. Wow.

Top of the Pops, 6th June 2024

The 2024 trend of rootsiness continues, with Zach Bryan entering the chart and a double performance from the man who might have started it all (?), Teddy Swims. Some variation is provided by Bring Me The Horizon's metalish rock and Central Cee's mid-Atlantic rap sound, plus Billie Eilish with another song from her album following the double bill last week.

None of that multifarious authenticity, however, can dislodge the incongruously breezy Sabrina Carpenter from number 1. Five weeks now!

It's a Billie Eilish week this week. Although she doesn't quite do enough to knock Sabrina Carpenter off the top (yet), she dominates the top ten with three hits from her new album, two of which are performed on the show. Things really are getting football crazy now. After the Lightning Seeds and Fat Les last week, footy fever now propels Atomic Kitten and Neil Diamond into the top 20. That makes up a quarter of an unusually fresh line-up, with only the Jonasu song and of course Ed Sheeran at number 1 having been featured already this year.

It's perhaps surprising that it's taken until July for Stormzy to make his first 2021 appearance. He's one of a trio of huge names who return to the show this week, alongside Justin Bieber and Billie Eilish. Arguably BTS as well.
