Top of the Pops, 10th December 2020

The Christmas chart onslaught begins in earnest, although Covid being what it is, several of the original artists are available to remote-perform their evergreen hits. So as well as the archive footage of Elton, we have appearances from friend of the show Jess Glynne, Kelly Clarkson and the grande dame of Christmas herself, Mariah Carey (with a few special invitees). Even Queen Ariana Grande chucks in a bit of festivity alongside her immovable number 1 bonking anthem.

Non-Christmassy fun comes from Miley Cyrus, Liam Gallagher and CJ. Congratulations to them for impinging on the nation's mostly mince pie-focused consciousness.

Debuts: None.

It's a most peculiar chart this week: a completely static top twelve, then several impressive new entries, and some nice climbers all together after that. The biggest beneficiary is of course King Ed Sheeran; this week he invites friend of the show Jess Glynne to fill in for Bieber in a nice exclusive.

We're also delighted to welcome back Katy Perry, and there's a nice britrap contingent as well as the latest relationship wreckage anthem from Lewis Capaldi.

Another week, another Diplo supergroup. This time it's Silk City who crash the chart thanks mainly to Dua Lipa, although co-producer Mark Ronson isn't actually hereo on the show.

At last, they've done it. Assisted by the accelerated chart ratio, Rudimental and friends make the one small step up to number 1, appearing with a carnival-type performance and big grins on their faces.

Aside from that it's mostly a rundown of faves from the last few weeks, the exception being the suspiciously smooth Shawn Mendes, in at number 13. Of note are the double-header marking the release of George Ezra's album, and the way Florida Georgia Line seem to be becoming unlikely TOTP regulars.

Double Drake this week: the great man holds steady at number 1, and also shares the distinction of highest new entry with Migos. There's no Greatest Show tune, sadly, but Hollywood is represented by Liam and Rita's theme from the Fifty Shades film. Sigrid is back, as are Not3s and Mabel, who seem to be on every week just now. The big new track of the moment comes from Rudimental, who show up with all three of their guest vocalists as well as, of course, that guy in the hat.

There's a certain deja vu about this week's Top of the Pops, as several chart climbers from two weeks ago have continued to rise and thereby bagged themselves another appearance. However there's plenty new as well, including a ferocious performance from Stormzy and a pair of exclusive medleys from Britain's two leading female (or any gender really) singers of the moment, Adele and Jess Glynne.

Shawn Mendes finally rises to number 1, knocking Bieber off the top at least for the moment, and the highest new entry comes from those likely lads the 1975.

Top of the Pops, 17th December 2015

Christmas is coming on fast, the goose is bulking up alarmingly, and the Pogues are scaling the chart once again, earning their annual From The Vault slot. Meanwhile in the present day it's a week of consolidation on the chart, enabling us to re-feature some recent entries from Years & Years, Robin Shulz and friend of the show Jess Glynn.

The most special performance this week is a Major Lazer double bill, where Olly from Years & Years and our friend Jess both fill in for MO, taking the stage alongside new-hit guest vocalist Nyla. Bieber remains at number 1 but is not here in person so we get a montage of pics of his and Ed Sheeran's faces.

Fortunately he agrees to grace us with his presence, performing quite a chunk of his newly released album.

Other than that there's a strong X Factor connection: One Direction and Olly Murs are former contestants, Jess Glynne has recently performed on the results show and even Ariana Grande benefits from One Last Time being chosen, during Movie Week for some reason.
