Top of the Pops, 14th January 2021

All the Christmas songs suddenly disappear into the ether, leaving room for some monster climbs by the rest of them. The resulting line-up is more or less a who's who of anyone who's anyone: Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa, Queen Ariana Grande (performing most of her album), Taylor Swift. They are ably supplemented by some chart favourites from the second half of 2020 in Tate McRae, Meduza and KSI.

Perhaps the most surprising climb of all is the Little Mix song, which leaps the eight places needed to hit the top almost out of nowhere. They give an ebullient performance, and give us a bit of their (so far) more minor hit No Time For Tears as an encore.

Top of the Pops, 5th November 2020

After several weeks of mostly slow climbers, today sees fireworks as three songs zoom straight into the top ten: friends of the show Little Mix, KSI, and right at the top Ariana Grande making her big return.

That pushes a lot of other songs downwards, meaning we're also able to feature several acts from lower down the top 40, including a rare sighting of actual guitars in the hands of Bring Me The Horizon. Central Cee makes his debut, and there are welcome pop-ins from Jax Jones and Sam Smith.

Double Drake this week: the great man holds steady at number 1, and also shares the distinction of highest new entry with Migos. There's no Greatest Show tune, sadly, but Hollywood is represented by Liam and Rita's theme from the Fifty Shades film. Sigrid is back, as are Not3s and Mabel, who seem to be on every week just now. The big new track of the moment comes from Rudimental, who show up with all three of their guest vocalists as well as, of course, that guy in the hat.

After last week's best-of-2017 feel, this week brings a fair few new hits. Ramz completes a long trek to the top 5, and there are big new entries from Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, and Liam and Rita from the new 50 Shades soundtrack.

There's also the open-to-question pairing of Craig David and Bastille, and for a bit of variety King Ed gets Andrea Bocelli in to do the faux-classical version of Perfect.

Top of the Pops, 21st December 2017

You can barely move for Christmas debris in the chart this week. Even what you might call second string Christmas hits like this week's From The Vault spot by Brenda Lee are breaching the top twenty. On top of Miss Lee, we get vaguely contemporary Christmas tunes from Ariana Grande and Leona Lewis, who after a few mulled wines are also persuaded to guest on a charming exclusive version of the Clean Bandit song).

All that December fun still leaves room for a newie from Not3s and the unholy Craig David/Bastille alliance. And we have a surprise on the Ed Sheeran song at number 1. Is it Beyonce? No, even better: friends of the show Little Mix join in for a lovely duet.

(That's it until after New Year now as the real life TOTP takes over. Merry Christmas!)

Top of the Pops, 28th September 2017

As semi-predicted last week, Khalid makes his second appearance in a fortnight, with a sampler of two of the hot new talent's current hits. Yxng Bane also doubles up, so he adds his sleeper hit Rihanna to a reprise of the smash Bestie. Meanwhile friends of the show Craig David and Little Mix are also in attendance, the latter doing without CNCO for a solo (or quattro?) version of Reggaeton Lento.

New material comes from highest new entrants Post Malone and 21 Savage, plus Niall Horan, while P!nk stops the show with a show-stopping acoustic version of her show-stopper What About Us.

All right! James Arthur is not letting go of number 1 this week so we're graced with his ebullient presence once more. And speaking of ebullience, the Busted boys return to the TOTP studio for the first time in forever, even though they're only number 60, thanks to a dearth of chart climbers. Hooray!

The exclusives keep on coming. Lil Wayne's posse cut from Suicide Squad is climbing the chart once more so he combs the studio for extra vocalists and ends up with a one-off feat. Craig David, Sean Paul and Ellie Goulding. Wow. Craig David cannot contain himself and so lends his vocals to Major Lazer's number one hit as well, in Justin Bieber's absence.

There's a rare appearance from Sia, another resurfacing of the Puth and Gomez hit, and a nice run-out for relative newcomer Anne-Marie.

We have some star power this week. There's the chart return of the Take That boys, guesting with Sigma, but that might even be eclipsed by a medley from friend of the show Justin Bieber. They rub shoulders with international glitterati Ariana Grande and Nick Jonas. Even Cookin' on 3 Burners are showing a nice bit of star potential as they debut.

At number one it's STILL the Drake track, which is approaching a half-Bryan Adams at the top. This week Drake takes the night off and guest vocalist Wizkid gives us a unique afro-style version with smooth backing from Craig David.

The big chart story this week is Drake's mighty leap to number 1, but unfortunately he is on the other side of the pond so we have to make do with a video montage. Not to worry though: we do have a transatlantic contingent Meghan Trainor and Shawn Mendes, along with hip Brits AlunaGeorge and, once again, the resurgent Craig David. The Craig David comeback continues! The slick one has the highest new entry this week, though Sigala's storming of the chart is perhaps more impressive, vaulting from nowhere into the top ten in their fourth week on the countdown.

ZAYN's track floating back up a couple of places allows him to go full ex-boyband member, performing a bizarre version of Pillowtalk backed by a full jazz band and segueing into an almost unrecognisable version of 1D's History. Mike Posner remains high as a kite at number one and friend of the show Zara Larsson is back once again. Oh, and the elusive Sia makes a rare and arty appearance.

A 90s-style chart leads to a fevered vision of what 90s TOTP would have been like if they hadn't relaxed their rules. Apart from a straight-in chart topper from ZAYN, almost nobody (with the admirable exception of Craig David) is climbing the top 40, so most performers come from the lower reaches.

That isn't necessarily a bad thing, though, as we're able to welcome some more leftfield performers than usual, including Twenty One Pilots and G-Eazy. Friends of the show Coldplay also sneak in with their Superbowl song.

TOTP is all about music, entertainment, showbiz, glitz, and winning the heart of the nation, so how could it not pay tribute to David Bowie? We show a classic performance of "Heroes", his highest-charting single of a dozen re-entering the chart this week.

Aside from that we see quite a few climbers, notably from David Guetta and the ever wonderful Craig David - and indeed the two team up for a special re-interpretation of Bang My Head: double David. Justin Bieber is firmly ensconced at number 1, but it's only the video, not a studio performance.

Debuts: Craig David, Big Narstie, Maty Noyes.
