Top of the Pops, 30th April 2020

It's a very quiet chart in some ways, but there's a decent number of new entries stretching from the top to the bottom of the top 40. From slow-burning new arrivals like Gerry Cinnamon, to new stuff from established stars like Sam Smith, to a double bill of blockbuster reactions to the pandemic from the Live Lounge Allstars and the thoroughly good egg Captain Tom Moore.

In fact the only non-new entry comes from friends of the show Little Mix, performing a lovely exclusive version of Break Up Song in split-screen acapella.

Well. With concerts, events and gatherings of all kinds being cancelled, Top of the Pops errs on the side of prudence and does the (almost) unthinkable: drops the studio. Instead we get a mix of archive footage (The Weeknd), concert footage (Eminem) and jolly low-fi Skype-type pop-ins (Dua Lipa, the welcome return of Anne-Marie, Da Beatfreakz in a multi-window Zoom-style scenario).

The week's relatively rich crop of debutants will have to wait for their big studio moments, but it can't be helped.

We have another new number one thanks to friends of the show Clean Bandit, but more surprisingly, the World Cup brings our old friends Baddiel, Skinner and the Lightning Seeds back to the chart, so here they are in the From The Vault slot.

It's quite a varied week: we have guitar experimentation from the 1975, sincere bawling from Tom Walker, UK urban from newcomer AJ Tracey and Not3s, and even sometime presenter Dappy with his music hat back on.

The climax of the show, though, has to be top megastar Kanye West celebrating the success of his latest album with an extended, ranty two-song performance.

Double Taylor this week: a second week at number one and a second track in the top ten means a second peformance for the TOTP fans. Swift heads up a strong transatlantic contingent including Justin Bieber and a returning Maroon 5 and Chris Brown (boooo), while the UK has Charli XCX and Yungen. More fresh delights appear as summer draws to a close. Not least is the collaboration between friends of the show Little Mix and CNCO, all nine of whom come to grace the TOTP stage. Liam Payne has the latest in the unending procession of 1D solo singles, and we have an exclusive double-header from Yxng Bane and Yungen, who are both capital fellows.

The big news, though, is the return of Justin Bieber. Although Dua Lipa impressively prevents him from reaching the very top, this week at least.

In a mild coincidence, there are appearances this week for both Kelli-Leigh and Jax Jones, who previously collaborated on the summer house classic I Got U. Funnily enough their co-credit on that track (well, Kelli wasn't credited, but whatever), Duke Dumont, also has a song further down the chart - perhaps he'll make the cut next week.

After quite a sludgy summer we're seeing a lot of chart movement just now, with big tunes from P!nk and Kesha also making their presence felt. The biggest news is of course Dua Lipa making a startling leap up to number 1 from four places below. Her fellow British-Kosovan Rita Ora is also on the show with a resurgent Your Song.

There's a very international flavour to TOTP this week. The Latin thing is catching fire now with not only Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee approaching the elite with their number 1 run (we show the video on this occasion), but also the swivel-hipped duo of Enrique Iglesias and Matt Terry, and J Balvin and Willy William storming the chart as well. And there's Scandi singer ALMA representing Northern Europe. (It's nice to see a few debuts here, after over a month without any.)

A couple of exclusives: it's Demi Lovato's turn to add some (extra) fun to the Ed Sheeran track that won't die, and Matt Terry and Charli XCX gamely fill in for Pharrell and Katy on Feels by Calvin Harris.

The Puerto Rico contingent are still bringing the fiesta to the number 1 spot, though the last remaining One Directioner Liam Payne runs them close-ish with his new Sheeran-penned, Sheeran-alike, I-can't-believe-it's-not-Sheeran track Strip That Down.

Other than that it's US solo starlets alternating with the producer-plus-feature production line; Cheat Codes and Demi Lovato even tick both boxes. Needless to say Ariana Grande isn't in the studio, but we play a tribute video to accompany her re-entry One Last Time.

Huge, old-style new entry incoming: DJ Khaled and a bunch of people but, to be fair, mainly Justin Bieber smash their way in at number 1. Khaled is here and, while he hasn't brough all his buds, Justin is in the building. Hooray! Not only that: since he's here, he's also good enough to take the stage with Demi Lovato and do the male voice bits in her song that sound more or less like him anyway on the record.

Also invading our airspace are Ellie Goulding and Charlie Puth, and there are longer runners from Disciples, Anne-Marie (who just can't say goodbye) and J Hus. Mr Hus also injects a bit of newness into an exclusive version of Rag 'n' Bone Man's modern classic.

TOTP has a decidedly urban feel this week, as J Hus, Future and this week's chart dominator Kendrick Lamar all roll up. Plus of course Ed Sheeran returns to number 1 with the more urban-flavoured of his two hits; have we all forgotten poor Castle on the Hill now?

The rest of the show is female-dominated. Larsson, Gaga, Lovato and Michaels are as good a pop star line-up as you'll find anywhere, I'd say. And who thought that Cheat Codes would be back? It's nice, too, that half the show is made up of fresh material.

We're very pop this week, with Demi Lovato, Little Mix, 5 Seconds Of Summer and new number 1 Justin Bieber providing the bulk of the show. Bieber also doubles up to fill in for the dashing (but again unavailable) Chris Brown on Pia Mia's Do It Again.

Friend of the show The Weeknd has released his album and invaded the lower reaches of the chart with no fewer than four mini-hits; he performs two of them alongside continued smash Can't Feel My Face. This week's archive dredge is Elton John - why is he back in the chart?

For the first time in three months or more the number one song stays on at the top, so well done Ella Henderson. Ed Sheeran's Sing slips down the chart but album track One is rising so he keeps up the momentum for his imminent album - but his songwriterly acousticness has competition from newcomer George Ezra. 5 Seconds of Summer perform a mix of two poptacular hits, and indie rock, pop-dance, dance-pop and afro-urbo-pop are represented as well.

Not many new entries this week, which means a lot of climbers and the chance for a few long-lived hits to get their turn on the show. Look out for a surprise duet near the end!

One Direction - Best Song Ever

Highest New Entry - In at number 2 - And what better way to kick off any episode of Top of the Pops than with everybody's favourite five eager beavers, jigging about to the general delight of the studio audience.

Demi Lovato - Heart Attack

Up 3 to number 33 - No, she wasn't on last week, that was Selena Gomez. Another polished performance from another pristine popstrel. And a great light show.

Rudimental ft. Ella Eyre - Waiting All Night

Up 9 to number 25 - Not the first time on for Rudimental but a TOTP debut for the talented Ella Eyre. The singer is front and centre in this performance, clouds of dry ice obscuring the Rude boys as they skulk in the shadows.

Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know?

Up 3 to number 18 - This uncharacteristically enduring Arctics hit gets a second airing as it climbs back into the top 20. The boys are happy to come on again, turning up the intensity for the second pound through.

Fuse ODG - Antenna

Up 2 to number 22 - And another returning face to restore the party vibe. With four female dancers wearing antennae this time around.

From the Vault: Toploader - Dancing in the Moonlight

Up 36 to number 27 - A huge leap up the chart for this pukka classic sends our tape delvers deep into the archive to retrieve this footage from the year 2000.

Ed Sheeran with Demi Lovato - Everything Has Changed

Up 1 to number 12 - Taylor is out of the country again, so who better to fill in than the versatile Demi Lovato? She and Ed have great chemistry, making eyes at each other throughout this fun reinterpretation.

Avicii ft. Aloe Blacc - Wake Me Up

Second week at number 1 - The euroDJ and his soulful pal return for a second performance, and this time Aloe Blacc wears a top hat, an enormous fur coat and white loafers. You've changed, Aloe.
