Top of the Pops, 10th May 2018

In a week with a lot of chart climbers, several tracks that have been around for a while get to make their TOTP debuts. Foremost is Cardi B, alongside her buds Bad Bunny and J Balvin - and Balvin makes it a two for one by guesting on the Liam Payne track as well.

David Guetta also makes good on a threat of some weeks' standing, performing his song with newcomer Brooks and also Flames - Sia isn't here but he blasts out a bit of the instrumental.

Post Malone storms the chart with fresh material, and Dua Lipa celebrates her fourth consecutive week on the show by bringing IDGAF out of mothballs alongside the song of the moment, One Kiss.

Phew! Drake only lasts a week at the top this time, as the sophisticated sounds of Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa glide effortlessly up to supplant him. In fact it's a pretty sophisticated show this week, with double features from Paloma Faith and George Ezra and the new banger from RnB smoothie ZAYN as well.

At the grimier end of things are Banx & Ranx, as well as American reprobate Post Malone. And since he's here, Calvin has  time to collaborate on an exclusive version of the M.O. track as well as his number 1 behemoth.

Debuts: Banx & Ranx.

Top of the Pops, 29th March 2018

The highest new entry this week is a novelty single: Lil Dicky and the dashing Chris Brown turn TOTP Thursday into Freaky Friday. Also making chart inroads are XXXtentacion, Khalid and Normani (of Fifth Harmony, or possibly ex-Fifth Harmony), and the indestructible Sigala.

We have a couple of special exclusives, too. Florida Georgia Line are back with a solo rendition of Let Me Go, their Hailee Steinfeld co-credit, and Maren Morris leaves the DJs at home to bring us an acoustic version of The Middle.

PS If you're wondering where Rudimental have got to, the problem is that they've been a non-mover for weeks and weeks, stuck behind Drake. Apart from the number 1 we only feature chart climbers, so they haven't been on much. Sorry, hat guy, but those are the rules.

Debuts: Lil Dicky.

Top of the Pops, 15th March 2018

Half of this week's TOTP is a sampler of most of the biggest hits of the moment: Portugal The Man, Jax Jones, Justin Timberlake, and needless to say, Drake. But there are also exciting new hits from Zedd, Paloma Faith and TOTP debutant XXXtentacion. The oddball is Stormzy's Blinded By Your Grace from before Christmas, which provides a nice break from the madness.

An unusually static chart means that TOTP has space for some long-runners as well as some gems from lower down the countdown than usual. Inevitably this means two corners of the Sheeran/Ezra/Smith triangle - there hasn't been a show without at least one of them since November - but it also means Ariana Grande and the Weeknd, who have been in the lower reaches for a few weeks, plus a couple of minutes of the Weeknd's solo offering - a bonanza of vaguely pervy RnB.

Meghan Trainor's second single is a storming success and the lady herself is in the country to perform it. We welcome back old favourites Sigma/Paloma and Vance Joy, and there's also a welcome suprise visit from Maroon 5. Ronson and Mars remain at the top, and after last week's studio appearance we make do with the video this time.

Debut: The Weeknd

Meghan Trainor - Lips Are Movin'

Some fun exclusive performances this week. First, with Demi L unavailable, Paloma Faith fills in for her on the duet with Olly Murs. Next, none other than Paul McCartney drops in for a solo version of his Kanye collaboration. And finally, Sam Smith brings a gospel choir for his latest TOTP popup.

Most of the other performances come from the dance world, as a fairly static January chart gives some long-runners a chance to climb back up. One Direction are also back, in a reflective mood, and Mark and Bruno are still at the top - once again we make do with the video, but what a video it is.

Debuts: Tchami, Kaleem Taylor.

With some spritzes of dance and whatever Ed Sheeran is, pop rules this week. The show is opened by a boyband sandwich with Ella Henderson as the tasty filling, and closed with a duo of personality-rich female pop delights (though Meghan Trainor is not in the studio so we make do with her vid).

Also, Talay Riley achieves a coveted second consecutive week on TOTP by featuring on another track, and friend of the show Paloma Faith and Sigma slow down Changes for an impassioned one-off performance that puts Jay James from the X Factor thoroughly to shame.

This eventful week sees multiple oddities. The late Michael Jackson storms the top 10 with Justin Timbo in tow, so we've edited together footage of both men's previous appearances into a dance-off. Paloma Faith is back and not getting any less ritzy, and the show culminates in a triumvirate of Eurovision successes including the winner, Conchita Wurst. Culminates? Well, no - Rita Ora crowns the countdown. Amazingly this is her first time on the new TOTP; and who is that mysterious tall gentleman lurking behind the decks?

Molly's Children of the World gets a pre-Eurovision TOTP showing as it storms into the chart at number 48, while five other female acts are also climbing the hit parade. Perhaps going some way to cancelling out the Chris Brown appearance, which in fairness has been a long time coming as his hit, now finally invading the top 10, has been around the top 20 for weeks. The new old MJ song is played over a montage of previous TOTP highlights, and the succession of in-at-the-top bangers continues with Calvin and a troupe of mixed-gender backing dancers.

As another soulful house anthem crashes in at the top, Sigma rise to the challenge of standing out and bring a confetti carnival of dancers and singers to sell their smash. The Vamps are no less ebullient, and Paloma Faith is on imperious form as her song gets a second wind.

Katy Perry's rapping friend Juicy J is elsewhere, so Iggy and Charli seize the chance to add a sassy one-off rap of their own, freshening up Dark Horse in its 16th week on the chart. And there are entries from two much-loved veteran pop bands, the Saturdays and the Kaiser Chiefs, plus newcomer Tove Lo.

It's Pharrell's week once again. Not only is the impish hat-donner now on a near-unprecedented third run at number one with a song newly anointed as a million-seller, he's also the ten-gallon musical brain behind Paloma Faith's new top ten entry; he duly larks around in the background of Paloma's performance before inviting her to join his own.
