Top of the Pops, 27th March 2025

Some strong new entries this week, from Sleep Token, Jade and most impressively Chappell Roan, jumping straight into her customary number 2 slot. One better than her, though, is Alex Warren, who takes a very impressive start to the year to the next level by attaining his first number 1 hit.

Doechii is also doing very well, but the big showcase artist this week is Playboi Carti. In the wake of his album dropping he brings us two hot tracks, with Skepta guesting.

It's a most peculiar chart this week: a completely static top twelve, then several impressive new entries, and some nice climbers all together after that. The biggest beneficiary is of course King Ed Sheeran; this week he invites friend of the show Jess Glynne to fill in for Bieber in a nice exclusive.

We're also delighted to welcome back Katy Perry, and there's a nice britrap contingent as well as the latest relationship wreckage anthem from Lewis Capaldi.

A week of reduced chart activity means that several long-running hits get another crack of the whip. Madison Beer is here without her DJ support to give us a candlelight version of All Day And Night, while Kygo, Jonas Blue and Meduza also represent the EDM contingent.

The big news, though, is the return of King Ed Sheeran. He and Justin Bieber doing impressions of each other are straight in at the top.

We welcome back the people behind several long-running hits once again: 5 Seconds Of Summer are having quite the chart run with Youngblood, and Years and Years, Jax Jones, Preme and Skepta (who this week brings along Wizkid for a two-hit combo) are doing pretty well too.

Newer sounds come from the 1975, and to a lesser extent Drake, who seems to be just settling into the number 1 spot.

Chart history is made, as Three Lions leaps 23 places to hit the very top thanks to World Cup fever and some wholly acceptable performances from the brave England lads. Baddiel and Skinner, and at least some of the Lightning Seeds, come into the study to join the celebration.

It's almost a shame, since other things that would be big news - a new anthem from Drake, Green Day back in for some reason - are relegated to the footnotes. Never mind though - let's see how long the nation will stay football crazy.

Debuts: None

Lots of new material here: Jonas Blue and misery master Juice Wrld both make chart breakthroughs, and a little lower down there's a glittering new entry from Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande. Meanwhile 5 Seconds Of Summer finally take their long-running hit to a TOTP-worthy peak.

We have another new number one thanks to friends of the show Clean Bandit, but more surprisingly, the World Cup brings our old friends Baddiel, Skinner and the Lightning Seeds back to the chart, so here they are in the From The Vault slot.

J Balvin has two hits this week, but he can't come on the show so Liam Payne and indeed Cardi B and Bad Bunny have to perform their hits without him.

Which songs have been rebounding up the chart in the new year lull? It's a fairly healthy mix of US party tracks and friends of the show, with the occasional 2016 fave thrown in for good measure. The bigger, sadder news is the death of George Michael; we leave it until the end of the show before screening a classic performance in tribute.

Debuts: None.

Multi-week chart climber OMI has now reached the top, so he is welcomed into the studio once again for a valedictory performance. There are also two debuts from artists who would have been heavily featured if TOTP had been on during the wilderness years: Justin Bieber and the ever ebullient Carly Rae Jepsen; it's a pretty ebullient week, in fact, with Meghan Trainor also featured. And praise the lord, Hozier has a new song out.

Football looms large here. Mr Worldwide Pitbull jets in with his two co-vocalists in tow to bring us the official World Cup song, while Three Lions climbs high enough for us to show an original performance from those hopeful days in '96. More surprisingly, the late Rik Mayall's Noble England has entered the top ten, so is played over a thoughtful montage.

But it's Ella Henderson who lifts the trophy this week and makes her Top of the Pops debut. Raleigh Ritchie and Skepta also appear for the first time, and the line-up is completed by a slow burner from Foxes and Zedd.
