Top of the Pops, 7th April 2022

It's one of those strange weeks where there isn't a lot of movement at the top of the chart, which means that the show is mainly populated by hits from the teens, 20s and 30s. That's no bad thing, though, since it gives recent hits from Russ Millions, Liilz and Becky Hill a second airing, and allows room to showcase the high climber from Potter Payper and the new one from Tate McRae.

The brightest star power comes from friend of the show Camila Cabello, who gives us a solo performance of Bam Bam and then sticks around to join in the lambada bits of the A1 and J1 song. Dave makes it a round four weeks at number 1.

Debuts: Potter Payper, Tiggs Da Author

One may have doubted whether it was possible, but the charts are even more Christmassy this week than they were last week. Elton and Ed are of course number 1, and the parade of festive faves has a pretty long tail: even though a lot of them are by oldies who aren't necessarily available to come on the show, we can delve down and find Leona Lewis and Camila Cabello to bring the Christmas cheer.

And fair play to D-Block Europe, SZA and ABBA for having hits with songs that aren't so Christmas-adjacent. D-Block do have their Santa hats on.

Debuts: None

D-Block Europe ft Central Cee and AJ Tracey - Overseas / Make You Smile

Up 1 to number 11 / In at number 42

ABBA - Little Things

Dave's album is out this week, so there's an exclusive performance of two tracks from him, with Stormzy in tow as well. Speaking of longtime friends of the show, can you believe it's well over a year since Rita Ora was on? And there's a super team-up by Anne-Marie and Little Mix.

From the US come Doja Cat, Lil Nas X and Camila Cabello. There's a debut appearance for Rain Radio, and King Ed Sheeran remains on his throne, looking down on the rest of the chart below him.

After a couple of eventful weeks the upper reaches of the chart have slowed down a bit, but there's plenty of action outside the top 20. Camila Cabello and Selena Gomez are both charging up, and British urban artists Darkoo and AJ Tracy both make mini-climbs - the latter brings us an exclusive all star remix of his 2019 behemoth.

Another week, another peak for Dominic Fike, though it's anyone's guess whether he can climb the last two places needed for a truly historic chart ascent. Also still doing well are Sam Smith, who is also this week's contestant on Sing With Camila, Mist, and the bulletproof Lewis Capaldi.

She's been killing it all year under the radar, but this is actually the first week that Lizzo's had the chart power to get on Top of the Pops. She's here and as ebullient as you'd expect.

In other news, we get a couple of round-ups of some lower-down hits thanks to three-song medleys from Drake and new friend of the show Aitch. And with Shawn Mendes unavailable, it falls to Stormzy to serenade Camila Cabello in the top position.

As the summer of britrap rolls on, this time it's Dave and Young T and Bugsey who are heading back up the charts, alongside a new entry from Krept and Konan. It's great that all these MCs are happy to support the show, rubbing shoulders with (and often outcharting) the likes of Camila Cabello and Justin Bieber, who guests with Billie Eilish this week.

One week off the top was enough for King Ed Sheeran, though, so now he's back at the top with the next song in the queue, the fairly lovely Beautiful People, alongside fellow friend of the show Khalid.

There's a lot of polite shuffling about in the chart this week, which gives us the opportunity to showcase a few hits that have been bubbling under for a while: Dominic Fike, Camila Cabello and Martin Garrix are the beneficiaries.

The Glastonbury effect has been pretty muted this year but the Killers are back in the chart. The summer of britrap continues with an entry from Young T and Bugsey, plus last week's debutant Aitch making it two weeks on TOTP in a row, and the biggest chart movement comes from King Ed Sheeran, whose Beautiful People (aided by friend of the show Khalid) joins I Don't Care (this week co-performed by Lewis Capaldi) in the top five.
