Top of the Pops, 12th December 2024

Here we are at the last Top Of The Pops of the year and the chart is pretty much snowed in now - only the Wicked soundtrack, Chrystal, and the laudable anomaly of Gracie Abrams at number 1 are not in the festive category.

So, we've got oldies from Wham! and Brenda Lee, newies from Tom Grennan and Laufey, and a new version of an oldie from Mariah with full military support. Merry Christmas!

In a slightly surprising development, Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding leap up to replace Ed Sheeran at the top after only a week! Elsewhere on the chart a few fallers from near the top mean that some long-running hits get to shuffle up a bit - not least Harry Styles who celebrates a year on the hit parade with a special steel drum-assisted performance.

We're also able to give a first exposure to some hits that have been quietly climbing for a while now, so welcome Tom Grennan, Meghan Trainor, Nathan Dawe and friend of the show Zara Larsson. Mimi Webb also gives us a special extra-dubby version of Red Flags.

Big new entries from Drake and to a lesser extent Beyonce have pushed most of the other songs down the chart, so we have to delve a long way to find performers - but we strike gold with fresh tracks from Doja Cat and a triumphantly returning Chase and Status.

It's pretty dance-heavy this week even apart from Beyonce's bandwagon jump: Sigala reach a new peak with their latest hit and LF System inch their way into the top three. Tom Grennan will please fans of more singer-songwriterly material.

As the football songs exit the chart, most other tracks shuffle up a place or two, which means repeat appearances for Tom Grennan, Anne-Marie and Niall Horan, Arrdee, Tones & I, and bafflingly, Maneskin, who are still in the top ten with two different tracks, neither of which is their Eurovision winner.

New material comes from KSI and Lil Durk, plus the latest posthumous release from Pop Smoke, which Dua Lipa helps to propel a little higher than usual. Needless to say King Ed Sheeran still reigns, as just the seventh artist to hit number one this year.
