Top of the Pops, 2nd December 2021

The Adele album is out, and she is good enough to give us a bit of the top three tracks from it to close the show this week. Between that and the sudden onset of Christmas music, current chart climbers are few and far between, which gives Lost Frequencies a chance to get on the show after seven weeks in the lower reaches.

Friend of the show Anne-Marie and Niall Horan have a nice new entry with the Children In Need song, and D-Block Europe hit their highest chart placing to date. Justin Bieber and especially Imagine Dragons are featured for the first time in a while. And we have a very special in-person Mariah Carey performance with a couple of guest stars.

Top of the Pops, 29th July 2021

As the football songs exit the chart, most other tracks shuffle up a place or two, which means repeat appearances for Tom Grennan, Anne-Marie and Niall Horan, Arrdee, Tones & I, and bafflingly, Maneskin, who are still in the top ten with two different tracks, neither of which is their Eurovision winner.

New material comes from KSI and Lil Durk, plus the latest posthumous release from Pop Smoke, which Dua Lipa helps to propel a little higher than usual. Needless to say King Ed Sheeran still reigns, as just the seventh artist to hit number one this year.

There are several new entries this week, including the queen of the 2020s Billie Eilish and a pair of British rappers, Arrdee and Tion Wayne. Man of the moment Tom Grennan is also here alongside Calvin Harris.

Chart continuity comes from friends of the show Little Mix, with an acoustic version of their Galantis-assisted hit, plus the year-plus chart run of Harry Styles, who this week performs the track on bongos and panpipes. Anne-Marie and Niall are also back, and of course Olivia Rodrigo is still making it look easy at the top of the chart.

Top of the Pops, 3rd June 2021

What will be this year's summer anthem? At the moment it looks likely to be by Olivia Rodrigo, who completely dominates the chart and indeed the show this week with three top ten hits at once. However, there's also a strong rest-of-the-world contingent here: BTS from Korea, Maneskin from Italy and indeed the barely perceptible Galantis on the Little Mix hit.

He've also got repeat showings from Mimi Webb (top ten for the first time) and Polo G, and a big new breaker from friend of the show Anne-Marie and Niall Horan.

Lockdown continues, so everyone listed below is either performing acoustically from their bedroom, leaning on videos or archive footage, or in the case of Becky Hill, belting it out from a rooftop accompanied by fireworks and an alpen horn.

Saint JHN tops off a pretty notable chart climb this week by taking the final little leap to number one, while many of our top stars (Bieber, Styles, er, Horan) consolidate their positions. Lil Mosey is a newcomer, and the likeable Doja Cat reaches a new chart peak.

As semi-predicted last week, Khalid makes his second appearance in a fortnight, with a sampler of two of the hot new talent's current hits. Yxng Bane also doubles up, so he adds his sleeper hit Rihanna to a reprise of the smash Bestie. Meanwhile friends of the show Craig David and Little Mix are also in attendance, the latter doing without CNCO for a solo (or quattro?) version of Reggaeton Lento.

PRESENTER: James Masterton

Thursday, 8 June 2017

Top of the Pops, 8th June 2017

In their fourth week at number 1 it's time for Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee to start getting creative, so they get Little Mix to drop some bars in a special exclusive remix. Little Mix are here in their own right for their power collaboration with Stormzy and as ever they're only too happy to do double duty.

Also on the TOTP stage are the finally returning Rita Ora, a second airing for Niall Horan's new song, Hailee Steinfeld and Maggie Linderman. And Coldplay remain popular with record buyers and streamers.

The highest new entry comes from Captain Ska. They're allowed to perform, but in such a heavily bleeped and blurred version (to comply with election broadcasting rules) that it's impossible to tell who they are, what they're doing or what they're singing about.

Debuts: Captain Ska.

Top of the Pops, 18th May 2017

It's common to see credited producers doing well in the chart these days, and this week three make it on to the show: Martin Solveig, Martin Jensen and Jonas Blue. The trio each stand around moodily while their vocalists perform the songs, and then celebrate by teaming up on an exclusive housed-up version of Lady Gaga's The Cure (they take a chorus each).

We also have pop, rap, whatever Niall Horan is and the sound of the summer, reggaeton. Yes, Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi (for it is they) have taken their Spanish-language hit to the very top, though it's largely thanks to the anglophone presence of Justin Bieber, who's good enough to come into the studio and help out on the remix in person.

The teen idol side of things is amply catered for here with appearances from Niall Horan and the lovely, beautiful, precious, adorable Vamps. And Little Mix may not be number 1 any more but we've the next best thing, Fifth Harmony.

There's a new one from Rae Sremmurd (who he) and a couple of tunes that have been around a while from Neiked, who scale a new peak after 11 weeks on the chart, and Calvin Harris. And that Little Mix-shaped gap at number 1 is filled by friends of the show Clean Bandit and friends (Sean Paul is back to his always available self this week).
