Top of the Pops, 26th August 2021

King Ed Sheeran can't be shifted from the top and it's hard to see who would even have a chance - the highest new entry this week is from Digga D and Arrdee and well done to them, but number 6 is a long way from number 1. It's a strong and diverse line-up on the show, though, with Lil Nas X, Olivia Rodrigo, KSI, Doja Cat, Little Mix, Anne-Marie and even Tones & I all arguably the the biggest current names in their respective sub-fields. Whew.

Top of the Pops, 29th July 2021

As the football songs exit the chart, most other tracks shuffle up a place or two, which means repeat appearances for Tom Grennan, Anne-Marie and Niall Horan, Arrdee, Tones & I, and bafflingly, Maneskin, who are still in the top ten with two different tracks, neither of which is their Eurovision winner.

New material comes from KSI and Lil Durk, plus the latest posthumous release from Pop Smoke, which Dua Lipa helps to propel a little higher than usual. Needless to say King Ed Sheeran still reigns, as just the seventh artist to hit number one this year.

Top of the Pops, 8th July 2021

King Ed Sheeran is back, and his chart position could probably have been predicted: Olivia Rodrigo's seemingly immovable object finally meets the true irresistible force. Less predictable this year has been the runaway success of Maneskin, who are back with their third hit this week and also guest with friends of the show Little Mix for a rockin' heartbreak anthem.

Tones & I has been in the chart's lower reaches for a while, so it's good to be able to feature her current single. There's also a debut for Jonasu and a classy trio of new entries from Aitch, Tyler the Creator and Doja Cat.

Top of the Pops, 2nd July 2020

DaBaby and Roddy Ricch have no mountains left to climb, but plenty of other milestones are being reached: Drake and Giveon and Hosh and 1979 all finally get on the show after weeks bouncing around the lower reaches of the chart, and the indestructible Harry Styles finally makes the top ten with Watermelon Sugar. He performs with a string quartet to celebrate.

The highest new entry comes from M Huncho and Dutchavelli, continuing the strong britrap showing in lockdown. Meanwhile Tones & I is back once again, Topic storms the top three, and Surf Mesa pop in as well.

Top of the Pops, 21st May 2020

We've got quite a surprising number 1 this week: DaBaby takes a five place bounce to pip Drake, Doja and the rest. He and Roddy Ricch give an ebullient splitscreen performance to celebrate.

We've also got another new chart peak for Sam Fischer, a big-news new entry from Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber, and new indoors versions of evergreen hits from Dua Lipa, Harry Styles and Saint JHN. Happy New Year! All the Christmas music has suddenly evanasced, so nearly every song in the chart is a climber - which means that this is going to be an especially creme-de-la-creme episode of TOTP, basically a Best Of Chart Music from the last couple of months. That means big names like Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish and chart monolith Lewis Capaldi, the inescapable Tones & I, and songs-of-the-moment from Endor and Arizona Zervas.

There is a bit of new stuff as well though, as One Acen and TOTP debutant Darkoo make the top 30 for the first time.

Debuts: Darkoo

Top of the Pops, 19th December 2019

With one week to go, the contenders for Christmas number 1 are manoeuvring into position, spearheaded by the mighty Stormzy and then Dua Lipa. Although it all presupposes that it's even possible to dislodge Tones & I, who is inching up the all-time list of long-running number 1s.

Also in the festive spirit (ie wearing Santa hats) are Leona Lewis, Lewis Capaldi and the highest new entrant Harry Styles. And britrap, the genre of 2019, is not forgotten thanks to Young T and Bugsey (as well as Stormzy of course).

It's a big week for chart climbers. Not only do we have the annual Christmas song invasion, but returning friend of the show The Weeknd leapfrogs all of them, and Ellie Goulding has been pretty nifty too.

Christmas is represented by an old performance from Wham! and an in-person appearance by Ariana Grande. And with many of the acts climbing the chart being from the 70s, Trevor Daniel is able to sneak himself an invitation from number 40.

Stormzy launches his bid for Christmas number 1, recruiting King Ed Sheeran and chart dark horse Burna Boy to help him. But it's looking like Tones & I may cling on, having first topped the chart back in October.

As we hurtle towards December, there are new entries from three big names: chart leviathan Lewis Capaldi, tousled enigma Harry Styles (who performs his longer runner Lights Up as well) and biggest of all, Miss 2019 Billie Eilish, who continues to make it look very easy.

There's also a special party performance from Lizzo with help from Tones & I, a debut appearance from Endor, and some rather off-putting racket from Blackbear.

The britrap train just doesn't stop: four new entries this week, from the returning KSI and serial hitmakers J Hus, Fredo and Dave, and Dave does a double performance because one of his older hits is climbing back up the chart as well.

On the sung side of things we have that nice Niall Horan as well as Maroon 5, and nothing can shift Tones & I from the top.

After last week's chart mayhem, this TOTP is the complete opposite: every song in the top 5 gets to appear, and they're all tracks that have been around for quite some time. Crowning it all is King Ed Sheeran, still top of the chart, though he mixes it up a bit by mixing in a bit of Beautiful People, thanks to a cameo by friend of the show Khalid.

For a bit of variety we do have a triple bill from Burna Boy, who features on three chart climbers this week. He performs his bits of all of them, bringing along TOTP debutante Mahalia to help with the most obscure of the three.
