Top of the Pops, 6th July 2023

It's a strong rap week this week: not only are Dave and Central Cee immovable at the top, but the chart is crashed by Stormzy, Fredo and Gunna as well. Playboi Carti is also here alongside the Weeknd, though there's no Madonna this week unfortunately. Shania Twain more than makes up for it.

It's a weird top ten this week, with almost every song standing still, which means that some songs from lower down the top 30 get their chance to shine: step forward JVKE, Tiesto and Joel Corry, plus new hits from Fredo, Mimi Webb and Libianca.

Miley Cyrus provides some action at the top of the chart by splatting in at number 1, and we've got a very special performance as David Guetta pays homage to his lifelong inspiration Eiffel 65.

With an audience back in the TOTP studio, it's fitting that Fred Again and the Blessed Madonna are here to take reflective view of the events of the last year. They're joined by fellow floor fillers Noizu and Boney M.

Our transatlantic megastars this week are The Weeknd, Doja Cat, SZA, and of course Olivia Rodrigo, who reprises Drivers License in a fun medley with her latest number 1. Perhaps most surprisingly, Eurovision winners Maneskin have a second song in the top 40. Bravo!

For the second week in a row the show starts with Wellerman, but this time it's the hastily assembled dance banger version featuring Nathan Evans. In non-shanty news, friend of the show The Weeknd is back, as is megastar Justin Bieber and new face Sabrina Carpenter. But aside from the Rodrigo monolith at number 1, the starriest performance of the week might be Billie Eilish teaming with Rosalia down at number 35.

The britrap train just doesn't stop: four new entries this week, from the returning KSI and serial hitmakers J Hus, Fredo and Dave, and Dave does a double performance because one of his older hits is climbing back up the chart as well.

On the sung side of things we have that nice Niall Horan as well as Maroon 5, and nothing can shift Tones & I from the top.

Once again more than half the line-up this week is britrap and related music - 2019 has really been the year for it. Meanwhile Post Malone seems to have abandoned US-rap for the moment, dropping in at number 11 with a soft rock song instead.

In other genres, Rita Ora fronts Jonas Blue's dance ditty as it reaches a new high position, and chart behemoth Lewis Capaldi flies the flag for hoary balladeering.

Another week, another peak for Dominic Fike, though it's anyone's guess whether he can climb the last two places needed for a truly historic chart ascent. Also still doing well are Sam Smith, who is also this week's contestant on Sing With Camila, Mist, and the bulletproof Lewis Capaldi.

She's been killing it all year under the radar, but this is actually the first week that Lizzo's had the chart power to get on Top of the Pops. She's here and as ebullient as you'd expect.

It's always impressive when a collaboration between more than about three artistes gets them all to turn out on the TOTP stage. This week we have two examples - from Jason Derulo, David Guetta, Nicki Minaj and Willy William, and Fredo, Young T and Bugsey - so A+ for effort to them. Fredo actually manages two appearances on his TOTP debut, including the number 1 single alongside Dave.

We're also strong in the singing department, thanks to Rita Ora, Becky Hill and Halsey, and the serious star power comes from Eminem, who's been on a few times lately.
