Top of the Pops, 13th August 2015

This week there's one of those supremely awkward appearances by a studio covers group that's somehow ended up in the chart - in this case Silento. To be fair, though, Joe Stone's performance isn't that much better, featuring some awkwardly shuffling backing dancers in the absence of Montell Jordan, whose track it basically is.

Some class is restored, though, by the jet-setting glamour of Calvin Harris, the indefinable charm of Shaggy, and a salute to the late and much-loved Cilla Black in the From The Vault slot.

Debuts: Mohombi, Faydee, Costi, Silento, Joe Weller, Emil, Joe Stone.

Top of the Pops, 2nd October 2014

Even into October, the Summer of Heartfeltness continues: we have a second consecutive week without Sam Smith (?!) but his absence is more than made up for by further helpings of George Ezra and friend of the show Ed Sheeran. There's some good old-fashioned pop-dance as well, mind - a trio of pop queens sit at number 1, and Ariana Grande also gets the most out of her plan ticket and performs her own hit Break Free as well. Next week's likely number 1 is not here yet, but Power Music Workout represent the song with their cheeky ripoff, a troupe of hired dancers playing it for laughs.

Not sure why Cilla Black is lurking in the chart's lower reaches, but From the Vault digs her out so that we can speculate.
