The Barbie chart domination is now almost at pre-Christmas Christmas song levels - half of this week's line-up comes from the multi-platform entertainment phenomenon. Three songs crash the top five, although they still can't shift Dave and Central Cee from the very top.

The biggest non-Barbie offering is the new Travis Scott album, and he is here to perform a three-song sampler. Calvin Harris and Sam Smith have also teamed up again, and we pay tribute to Sinead O'Connor.

Lewis Capaldi is back! He smashes in at number 1 and it's instantly like he's never been away. Aside from him there's not too much movement near the top of the chart, so we're able to feature some of the tracks that have been toiling lower down for a while: Rema, Oxlade and the returning Nicky Youre and Charli XCX are all beneficiaries of this.

Many, many congratulations to Elton John and Dua Lipa for doing what many thought impossible and deposing King Ed Sheeran from number 1 - for the moment at least. Their track has a very old-school feel about it, not only because it's a combination of older songs but because it's climbed to number 1 by building popularity with the general public. Fancy.

Elsewhere we've got a debut from Ewan McVicar and a sort-of debut for Jesy Nelson, plus a double-header from Sam Fender who makes a bit of a chart breakthrough this week. The Willow and Tyler Cole (aka The Anxiety) track is also climbing impressively. And why is Adele back in the chart?

The bookers dip way down the chart this week, featuring rare outside-the-top-40 hits from Nicki Minaj and (gasp) Elton John, and there's also room for new face Bella Poarch. More regular guests include friends of the show Little Mix and Dua Lipa, plus Tion Wayne and Russ Millions in their third week at number 1.

But the chart excitement comes from four new entries: three from J Cole, plus a retinue of guest stars, and a follow-up from Olivia Rodrigo that almost matches the incredible peak of her first hit.

There's not as much variation in genre as usual here: Drake's album release and high-profile guest star remixes by Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion spearhead the hip-hop charge and don't leave room for too much else. On the plus side, the ritzy cameos from Beyonce downwards are all happy to Zoom-chat on to the show - it's not like they're doing much else.

On the British side of things the likeable Simba reaches a new chart peak and friends of the show Little Mix are on call with hairbrush mics and lippy. JP Saxe and Julia Michaels's lockdown-friendly anthem continues to climb as well.

It's always impressive when a collaboration between more than about three artistes gets them all to turn out on the TOTP stage. This week we have two examples - from Jason Derulo, David Guetta, Nicki Minaj and Willy William, and Fredo, Young T and Bugsey - so A+ for effort to them. Fredo actually manages two appearances on his TOTP debut, including the number 1 single alongside Dave.

We're also strong in the singing department, thanks to Rita Ora, Becky Hill and Halsey, and the serious star power comes from Eminem, who's been on a few times lately.

Friends of the show super team-up Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson have had one of the more compelling climbs to number 1 of recent years, so it's great to welcome them into the studio once again for a triumphant performance, backed up by (most of) a full orchestra. Other familiar faces in attendance include Little Mix (but with the added bonus of Machine Gun Kelly inserting his rap), Rag 'n' Bone Man and Jason Derulo (plus Nicki Minaj again - wow!)

There's also plenty of new stuff again, from Luis Fonsi, French Montana and red pill hero Shawn Mendes. And ZAYN swings by for a compelling stripped-back performance of Still Got Time.

The other big newies are the infectious On My Mind from Disciples and Jason Derulo's star-studded rudey collaboration, and those are backed up by a phunky phalanx of British and overseas hits. We've a bit of a departure this week, as for the first time in history Top Of The Pops DOESN'T PLAY THE NUMBER ONE SONG! Sales of smelling salts rocket across the UK. There is a good reason, though - Ed Sheeran has had the number 1 and 2 slots tied up for a month so it's about time Castle On The Hill, which could sort of be considered a co-number 1 in a way, got its moment in the spotlight.

What else? Well, Dua Lipa is all over the chart at the moment. She follows up last week's two-song medley with a guest spot on the Martin Garrix record, and also fills in for Taylor Swift alongside ZAYN on an exclusive version of the 50 Shades problemato-pop behemoth.

We've also got a reprise from Clean Bandit, who are climbling the chart once more, a big new Major Lazer track, and plenty more lively stuff that you may or may not have heard of.

Mannequin challenge guys Rae Sremmurd are here too, and there's a real treat at number 1: Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj invade the Clean Bandit song, making a supercharged exclusive concoction of the kind you can only find on TOTP.

The way the chart works nowadays means that five of the songs performed on the show two weeks ago now return to the show - more than half the line-up. To keep things fresh, most of the artistes in question change up their arrangements, including a lovely candlelight performance from friend of the show Ellie Goulding and a reggaeton remix from Grande and Minaj with a cameo from the legendary Don Omar.

It's not all continuity, though - there are big returns from megastars Calvin Harris and Emeli Sande, and the slow burner from Matoma and Becky Hill finally rises high enough to make the cut in its eighth week on the chart.
