Top of the Pops, 7th November 2024

Incredible scenes this week as the number 1 single is... not Sabrina Carpenter! Instead it's Gigi Perez, capping off one of the more impressive chart climbs of the year with (at least) a week at the very top. Sabrina is not to be defeated completely though, as newer hit Bed Chem is looming ominously in the lower reaches of the top ten.

Other big news includes a big new entry from Lady Gaga, and the release of Tyler the Creator's album, sampled here with two choice tracks. Addison Rae doubles up as well, adding new hit Aquamarine to the still-climbing Diet Pepsi.

And not only that: she fills in alongside Bruno Mars, as Lady Gaga is off promoting her Joker musical madhouse film.

Elsewhere we have the return of international megastar Jimin, a nice slowed-down candlelight performance from Jazzy, and a big new entry from KSI. Plus a new chart peak for Addison Rae and a look back into the past with Crowded House.

Top of the Pops, 26th August 2021

King Ed Sheeran can't be shifted from the top and it's hard to see who would even have a chance - the highest new entry this week is from Digga D and Arrdee and well done to them, but number 6 is a long way from number 1. It's a strong and diverse line-up on the show, though, with Lil Nas X, Olivia Rodrigo, KSI, Doja Cat, Little Mix, Anne-Marie and even Tones & I all arguably the the biggest current names in their respective sub-fields. Whew.

Thursday, 29 July 2021

Top of the Pops, 29th July 2021

As the football songs exit the chart, most other tracks shuffle up a place or two, which means repeat appearances for Tom Grennan, Anne-Marie and Niall Horan, Arrdee, Tones & I, and bafflingly, Maneskin, who are still in the top ten with two different tracks, neither of which is their Eurovision winner.

New material comes from KSI and Lil Durk, plus the latest posthumous release from Pop Smoke, which Dua Lipa helps to propel a little higher than usual. Needless to say King Ed Sheeran still reigns, as just the seventh artist to hit number one this year.

Top of the Pops, 25th March 2021

With Olivia Rodrigo capsizing all the way down to number 18 this week, the top ten is finally showing some movement. One beneficiary is Nathan Evans, but we all get to enjoy a high-quality show featuring a lot of very big hits.

With KSI busy performing his new track with Yungblud, Anne-Marie brings us an acoustic version of Don't Play. There's also a double performance by Doja Cat (plus Saweetie) and a riotous exclusive from RAYE and her compadres D-Block Europe. Top of the Pops, 28th January 2021

Olivia Rodrigo holds on at the top but there is stiff competition from friend of the show Anne-Marie, as well as the indomitable Ariana Grande, who recruits a couple of the other performers this week for an exclusive deluxe version of 34+35.

The most unexpected appearance here might be the Longest Johns, riding a wave of sea shanty fever. But there's also a debut from Nuka alongside Derulo, and a return appearance from Kid Laroi.

Top of the Pops, 14th January 2021

All the Christmas songs suddenly disappear into the ether, leaving room for some monster climbs by the rest of them. The resulting line-up is more or less a who's who of anyone who's anyone: Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa, Queen Ariana Grande (performing most of her album), Taylor Swift. They are ably supplemented by some chart favourites from the second half of 2020 in Tate McRae, Meduza and KSI.

Perhaps the most surprising climb of all is the Little Mix song, which leaps the eight places needed to hit the top almost out of nowhere. They give an ebullient performance, and give us a bit of their (so far) more minor hit No Time For Tears as an encore.

Debuts: None.

Top of the Pops, 5th November 2020

After several weeks of mostly slow climbers, today sees fireworks as three songs zoom straight into the top ten: friends of the show Little Mix, KSI, and right at the top Ariana Grande making her big return.

That pushes a lot of other songs downwards, meaning we're also able to feature several acts from lower down the top 40, including a rare sighting of actual guitars in the hands of Bring Me The Horizon. Central Cee makes his debut, and there are welcome pop-ins from Jax Jones and Sam Smith.

She may have had one of the albums of the year, but we haven't seen that much of friend of the show Dua Lipa on TOTP lately. She puts that right this week, sneaking into the line-up as Hallucinate rises to number 31. Also breaking the surface is Dermot Kennedy, while Simba and Gunna make rather flashier inroads.

Paul Woolford and Diplo have quietly floated up into the top ten so they make a third appearance in six weeks, while Cardi B and Megan remain at the top, glee unabated.

Top of the Pops, 10th September 2020

It's a strange chart this week: almost nobody has climbed more than three places. The exceptions are Clean Bandit and the new entry from Calvin Harris and friend of the show The Weeknd, so they beam in as much energy as is humanly possible over a remote connection.

Huge congratulations also to Cardi and Megan, who perform as much of their song as the censors allow to celebrate reaching the top.

Top of the Pops, 6th August 2020

Taylor Swift's album arrives, placing three new songs in the upper reaches and pushing most other tracks down accordingly, which means opportunities for a couple of climbers in the lower reaches: Tom Walker and Dua Lipa are both delighted to appear. Taylor herself brings us an impassioned remote rendition of Cardigan.

Swifty doesn't have the highest new entry, though. That honour goes to men of the moment Nathan Dawe and KSI, who appear in split screen. Friends of the show Little Mix also place well with their newest release, and MNEK and Joel Corry hold on at number 1.

Most of the higher-up climbers this week are the same ones as last week, so we get to showcase some of the bubbler-unders - StaySolidRocky, 220 Kid, and the surprisingly seldom featured 1975.

There are surges from Harry Styles and KSI, but the big story is Gaga and Grande pelting into the top spot with their summer behemoth. They mesh pretty well in split screen.

In what is being billed as Radio 1's first ever number 1 hit, the Live Lounge Allstars leap four places to hit the top, all in aid of a good cause of course. The lockdown isolation vibe is carried on with downbeat solo performances from Powfu's samplee Beabadoobee and Joel Corry's collaborator Harlee, plus a Zoom chat version of the 1975.

There are also big hip hop entries (in video form) from KSI and the Scotts and dance from the 220 Kid, and Sam Fischer gets his TOTP debut at last after months in the lower reaches of the chart.
