Top of the Pops, 30th May 2024

It's a Billie Eilish week this week. Although she doesn't quite do enough to knock Sabrina Carpenter off the top (yet), she dominates the top ten with three hits from her new album, two of which are performed on the show. Also doubling up is Natasha Bedingfield, both of whose resurrected bangers are climing the chart this week.

There are also new tracks from Gunna and Tems, and reprises from NewEra and Hozier, plus a tribute to Amy Winehouse to fit in with the new film about her.

The year's trend so far for hits by earnest beardy guys is showcased particularly well this week, with longish runners Mark Ambor and Michael Marcagi joined by Myles Smith and, more alarmingly, Post Malone and Morgan Wallen (maybe not all of them have beards, but they are beardy in spirit).

However there is tonal variation provided by Chappell Roan and Eurovision's triumphant Nemo. And the ever perky Sabrina Carpenter remains at the top.

Debuts: Morgan Wallen, Nemo, Myles Smith

Post Malone ft. Morgan Wallen - I Had Some Help

Welcome to Drake vs Kendrick Lamar week! Top of the Pops presents a handy round-up of all the diss tracks that are climbing the chart in one manageable package. Also featured is a man who has collaborated with both, Future, so perhaps he can arbitrate if the result is in doubt.

On the pop side of things we have friend of the show Dua Lipa and a randomly returning Harry Styles, and on the authentic American troubadour side of things we have Benson Boone, newcomer Tommy Richman and arguably Shaboozey. Sabrina Carpenter continues to keep it classy at number 1.

The tortured poet wave has largely broken, meaning that a lot of songs shuffle up a few places, giving us a nice compendium of the top hits of the moment from Benson Boone, Dasha, Artemas and even Noah Kahan. The most impressive climb, though, has to be Sabrina Carpenter skipping up all the way to her first even number 1 single.

Taylor Swift isn't completely done either, though, and she's here with another track from her super new album. Friend of the show Dua Lipa is here too, and Natasha Bedingfield is back with a second resurrected track, this time Badger-assisted.

Debuts: Badger

Badger vs Natasha Bedingfield - These Words

High Climber - Up 13 to number 22

Benson Boone - Beautiful Things

Up 2 to number 4

Dua Lipa - Illusion

Up 3 to number 16

Noah Kahan - Stick Season

In a week with such a high profile new release, it was inevitable that the number 1 spot would of course be taken by the world-shaking cultural icon Post Malone - and of course Taylor Swift, on whose song he is kindly invited to guest.

Elsewhere the influx of Swift has pushed most other songs down a few places, so we have to look a fair way down the chart for other climbers. That's good news for Shaboozey and Lay Bankz, and even Pozer down at number 41. Also of note is the new entry from Headie One and Stormzy - with a perhaps surprisingly low-key chart position for such a big-name team-up, but of course they bring the energy to the TOTP studio.

Debuts: Lay Bankz, Shaboozey

Pozer - Malicious Intentions

In at number 41

Drake - Push Ups

In at number 14

Bryson Tiller - Whatever She Wants

Up 2 to number 22

Shaboozey - A Bar Song (Tipsy)

High Climber - Up 25 to number 16

Lay Bankz - Tell Ur Girlfriend

Up 13 to number 18

From The Vault: Amy Winehouse - Back To Black

Up 8 to number 43

Headie One ft. Stormzy - Cry No More

In at number 33

Taylor Swift ft. Post Malone - Fortnight

Straight in at number 1
