Top of the Pops, 16th December 2021

One may have doubted whether it was possible, but the charts are even more Christmassy this week than they were last week. Elton and Ed are of course number 1, and the parade of festive faves has a pretty long tail: even though a lot of them are by oldies who aren't necessarily available to come on the show, we can delve down and find Leona Lewis and Camila Cabello to bring the Christmas cheer.

And fair play to D-Block Europe, SZA and ABBA for having hits with songs that aren't so Christmas-adjacent. D-Block do have their Santa hats on.

Thursday 9 December 2021

Top of the Pops, 9th December 2021

This is the point where the charts really go Christmas crazy, so well done to GAYLE for almost making the very top with her decidedly un-Christmassy debut single. What a chart story that would have been, but number 2 is still a big deal and very well deserved. Congratulations also to Imagine Dragons and indeed Ed Sheeran for managing small chart climbs against the rising tide of sherry and trifle.

In festive news, we welcome new-for-this-year tracks from George Ezra and Olivia Dean, and invite self-appointed Mr Christmas Michael Buble to delight us with a medley of three of his American-style faves. It's Brenda Lee's turn in the From The Vault slot, and Adele hangs on to the top spot for now at least.

Thursday 2 December 2021

Top of the Pops, 2nd December 2021

The Adele album is out, and she is good enough to give us a bit of the top three tracks from it to close the show this week. Between that and the sudden onset of Christmas music, current chart climbers are few and far between, which gives Lost Frequencies a chance to get on the show after seven weeks in the lower reaches.

Friend of the show Anne-Marie and Niall Horan have a nice new entry with the Children In Need song, and D-Block Europe hit their highest chart placing to date. Justin Bieber and especially Imagine Dragons are featured for the first time in a while. And we have a very special in-person Mariah Carey performance with a couple of guest stars.

They perform two tracks from it, giving friend of the show Selena Gomez her first appearance in 2021. Top of the Pops, 21st October 2021

Many, many congratulations to Elton John and Dua Lipa for doing what many thought impossible and deposing King Ed Sheeran from number 1 - for the moment at least. Their track has a very old-school feel about it, not only because it's a combination of older songs but because it's climbed to number 1 by building popularity with the general public. Fancy.

Elsewhere we've got a debut from Ewan McVicar and a sort-of debut for Jesy Nelson, plus a double-header from Sam Fender who makes a bit of a chart breakthrough this week. The Willow and Tyler Cole (aka The Anxiety) track is also climbing impressively. And why is Adele back in the chart?

Thursday 16 September 2021

Top of the Pops, 16th September 2021

Last week it was Kanye West, this week it's Drake: three songs crash into the top ten. But that's not even the biggest news story of the week, because none other than ABBA have reformed to be welcomed into the TOTP studio.

With all that upheaval, almost no one else is climbing the chart, which means we take a deep dive and unearth some gems from lower down. That means the new solo single from Charli XCX, a debut appearance for Sam Fender, Dermot Kennedy's first showing since January, and the duet between Willow (Smith) and Tyler Cole. Friends of the show Little Mix are here with their nail-biting first single as a trio, and King Ed Sheeran continues working his way up the all-time number 1s list.

Momentarily taking some of the spotlight from King Ed Sheeran, none other than Kanye West blusters into town, riding a wave of three big instahits from his latest album. But even their star power might not quite match up to the combined wattage of Elton John and Dua Lipa. Or from a global perspective, BTS.

In addition, there's let another new track from hit machine Doja Cat, a David Guetta song that's been bubbling under for the last six weeks, and a very impressive chart climb by Glass Animals. And dancefloor royalty Becky Hill raises the tempo as always.

He performs both to close the show, but not before we all enjoy a rip-roaring line-up including friends of the show Clean Bandit, Joel Corry and Charli XCX, newcomer Clinton Kane and RnB MVP Doja Cat.

King Ed Sheeran can't be shifted from the top and it's hard to see who would even have a chance - the highest new entry this week is from Digga D and Arrdee and well done to them, but number 6 is a long way from number 1. It's a strong and diverse line-up on the show, though, with Lil Nas X, Olivia Rodrigo, KSI, Doja Cat, Little Mix, Anne-Marie and even Tones & I all arguably the the biggest current names in their respective sub-fields. Top of the Pops, 29th July 2021

As the football songs exit the chart, most other tracks shuffle up a place or two, which means repeat appearances for Tom Grennan, Anne-Marie and Niall Horan, Arrdee, Tones & I, and bafflingly, Maneskin, who are still in the top ten with two different tracks, neither of which is their Eurovision winner.

New material comes from KSI and Lil Durk, plus the latest posthumous release from Pop Smoke, which Dua Lipa helps to propel a little higher than usual. Needless to say King Ed Sheeran still reigns, as just the seventh artist to hit number one this year.

Things really are getting football crazy now. After the Lightning Seeds and Fat Les last week, footy fever now propels Atomic Kitten and Neil Diamond into the top 20. That makes up a quarter of an unusually fresh line-up, with only the Jonasu song and of course Ed Sheeran at number 1 having been featured already this year.

It's perhaps surprising that it's taken until July for Stormzy to make his first 2021 appearance. He's one of a trio of huge names who return to the show this week, alongside Justin Bieber and Billie Eilish. Arguably BTS as well.

Off the field, there's a new chart peak for the current Jonas Brothers single, a new track involving Drake, dancefloor royalty Becky Hill, and a couple of the less well-known songs from Miss 2021, Olivia Rodrigo. King Ed Sheeran reigns at the top for a second week.

King Ed Sheeran is back, and his chart position could probably have been predicted: Olivia Rodrigo's seemingly immovable object finally meets the true irresistible force. Less predictable this year has been the runaway success of Maneskin, who are back with their third hit this week and also guest with friends of the show Little Mix for a rockin' heartbreak anthem.

Tones & I has been in the chart's lower reaches for a while, so it's good to be able to feature her current single. There's also a debut for Jonasu and a classy trio of new entries from Aitch, Tyler the Creator and Doja Cat.

Top of the Pops, 24th June 2021

There's a lot of chart news this week. Lorde is back, but such is the power of Olivia Rodrigo that New Zealand's pop yoda is actually outdone by Britain's own Rodrigo-alike Mimi Webb. Maneskin continue to defy conventional wisdom about Eurovision winners and rock music in general by now having ANOTHER hit with their version of Beggin'. And with the football starting up, Three Lions is looking in pretty good shape to go higher than its current placing of 22.

Among all that chart bedlam, some credit should go to Masked Wolf and Tom Zanetti, who have both racked up impressive runs in the top 20 and deserve their repeat appearances here.

There are several new entries this week, including the queen of the 2020s Billie Eilish and a pair of British rappers, Arrdee and Tion Wayne. Man of the moment Tom Grennan is also here alongside Calvin Harris.

Chart continuity comes from friends of the show Little Mix, with an acoustic version of their Galantis-assisted hit, plus the year-plus chart run of Harry Styles, who this week performs the track on bongos and panpipes. Anne-Marie and Niall are also back, and of course Olivia Rodrigo is still making it look easy at the top of the chart.

Our transatlantic megastars this week are The Weeknd, Doja Cat, SZA, and of course Olivia Rodrigo, who reprises Drivers License in a fun medley with her latest number 1. Perhaps most surprisingly, Eurovision winners Maneskin have a second song in the top 40. Bravo!

What will be this year's summer anthem? At the moment it looks likely to be by Olivia Rodrigo, who completely dominates the chart and indeed the show this week with three top ten hits at once. However, there's also a strong rest-of-the-world contingent here: BTS from Korea, Maneskin from Italy and indeed the barely perceptible Galantis on the Little Mix hit.

He've also got repeat showings from Mimi Webb (top ten for the first time) and Polo G, and a big new breaker from friend of the show Anne-Marie and Niall Horan.

More regular guests include friends of the show Little Mix and Dua Lipa, plus Tion Wayne and Russ Millions in their third week at number 1.

That means welcoming Duncan Laurence, as well as the latest hit from Ava Max. Glass Animals are back on the show and it's nice to see Ella Henderson, duetting here with Tom Grennan. Thursday 14 January 2021

Top of the Pops, 14th January 2021

All the Christmas songs suddenly disappear into the ether, leaving room for some monster climbs by the rest of them. The resulting line-up is more or less a who's who of anyone who's anyone: Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa, Queen Ariana Grande (performing most of her album), Taylor Swift. They are ably supplemented by some chart favourites from the second half of 2020 in Tate McRae, Meduza and KSI.

Perhaps the most surprising climb of all is the Little Mix song, which leaps the eight places needed to hit the top almost out of nowhere. They give an ebullient performance, and give us a bit of their (so far) more minor hit No Time For Tears as an encore.

PRESENTER: Heidi Range (from an abandoned hairdresser's)

Thursday 7 January 2021

Top of the Pops, 7th January 2021

It's a strange chart this week, as many Christmas faves get one last kick up the chart even as the pine-scented magic fades, while long runners from last year rub shoulders with hopefuls for 2021. Amid all that, Asian Dub Foundation and Stewart Lee are an entirely unexpected presence.

The glorious and ludicrously belated number 1 from Wham! aside, the editorial decision is to concentrate on non-Christmas material here, so there's room for friends of the show Miley Cyrus and Dua Lipa, alongside bright young things CJ, Shane Codd and Kid Laroi. All this and the return of Ed Sheeran.

Fantasy Top of the Pops 2020 round-up

Happy new year once again!

We're excited to bring you the year's round-up. We don't need to spend too long discussing the real-life Christmas and New Year Top of the Pops editions - it was good to see them as usual, but the line-up was as bizarre as ever. Celeste, for example, had no hits last year (again!) and seems to have been featured (again!) as part of ongoing BBC/industry attempts to crown her as a next big thing - the opposite of what Top of the Pops is meant to be about.

Back in fantasy land, where it's much sunnier even though Covid is still a thing, here are the top eleven TOTP artists for the year:

In joint eighth place with ten appearances is DaBaby. The highest-placed TOTP debutant for this year, DaBaby was all over the show in the first half of the year, mainly thanks to collaborations with Camila Cabello and Roddy Ricch, plus one performance of his own hit Find My Way.

Also in joint eighth place with ten appearances is Mabel. Two hits of her own plus collaborations with Clean Bandit and AJ Tracey gave Mabel her strongest year so far.

And also in joint eighth place with ten appearances is Drake. Drake appeared on nine different tracks this year, with Toosie Slide being the biggest, but even short-lived songs of his (or features) often charted highly at least for a week or two. That's good enough for the chart legend's third best TOTP year.

And also in joint eighth place with ten appearances is Ariana Grande. Queen Ariana took until the end of the year to really get going, but once she let the big guns loose she was all but impossible to shift from the top of the chart.

In joint sixth place with eleven appearances is Roddy Ricch. After only one previous appearance on the show, Ricch was ever-present on the chart in the first half of the year thanks to his two huge hits, The Box and Rockstar.

Also in joint sixth place with eleven appearances is Joel Corry. He appeared a few times in 2019, but 2020 was the breakout year for Corry. Lonely and then the megahit Head and Heart made him a mainstay right through the year.

In joint third place with twelve appearances is Harry Styles. Styles impressed a lot of people with his classy pop this year, and twelve appearances with three very solid hits gives him a better year than One Direction ever achieved.

Also in joint third place with twelve appearances is AJ Tracey. Arguably britrap's hottest MC at the moment, Tracey followed up a very strong 2019 with an even better 2020. His own West Ten was a big hit, and he also collaborated with Stormzy, Aitch, Mostack and Headie One, rarely leaving the top ten for months at a time.

In second place with fifteen appearances is Dua Lipa. No one can deny the year Dua has had, and that's been reflected in the charts and TOTP appearances. She brought five different songs from the Future Nostalgia album into the TOTP studio, and even more impressively, just about every appearance was as lead artist.

And in first place with nineteen appearances is The Weeknd. Another artist who had a huge album this year, The Weeknd had his best ever TOTP year (even beating 2015) with notably long-running hits Blinding Lights and In Your Eyes, as well as a collaboration with Calvin Harris. He doesn't quite match the 21 appearances Lewis Capaldi managed last year, but he has been a constant presence on the TOTP screen (via Zoom) and richly deserves his place at the top of this list.

Finally, here's the updated all-time Fantasy TOTP list:

1 Ed Sheeran (80)
2 Ariana Grande (57)
= Little Mix (57)
4 Dua Lipa (55)
5 Drake (49)
6 The Weeknd (43)
= Sam Smith (43)
= Clean Bandit (43)
9 Justin Bieber (43)
= Calvin Harris (42)
11 Camila Cabello (37)
12 Stormzy (35)
== Jess Glynne (35)
== Rita Ora (35)
15 Ellie Goulding (33)
== George Ezra (33)
17 Jason Derulo (32)
18 Khalid (29)
== Zara Larsson (29)
20 Jax Jones (28)
== Shawn Mendes (28)

Ed Sheeran only appeared once this year, but he looks safe at the top for a while to come. Ariana jumps up to tie Little Mix for second place, and The Weeknd's big year makes him the highest new entrant to the top 20. Rita Ora, Ellie Goulding and George Ezra are the highest-places artistes who didn't appear on the show at all (except maybe as part of the lockdown charity record).

That's all. Let's hope 2021 is a better year!
