Top of the Pops, 28th July 2016

Despite his extended stay at number 1 Drake hasn't been into the studio for a couple of weeks, but he puts that right tonight, bringing us both his current hits with a guest violinist and harpsichord player to keep things fresh. He matches Wet Wet Wet this week and Whigfield doesn't have a single out so he may equal Mr Adams in seven days' time.

This week's debut is girl band M.O., not to be confused with the bendy Scandi vocalist MØ who was on last week. The other big news is the return of Katy Perry, and the line-up is completed by popular boy band 5SOS, the return of Snakehips, friend of the show Ariana Grande, the continued efforts of Becky Hill, and Shawn Mendes's red pill anthem.

As well as the Mursinator, Bastille and are returning after some time away, the latter now with her own song after spending most of last year guesting with Major Lazer. Jonas Blue, Kent Jones and promising newcomers Christine and the Queens are also making headway up the chart.

Drake's still at number one, I'm afraid, but once again Top of the Pops finds a way to keep the One Dance performances fresh. This week we have Drizzy's featured performer Wizkid mashing it up with Tinie Tempah, whose Mamacita he also guests on in the chart this week.

Freshness also emanates from MK and Becky Hill, and to a lesser extent Charlie Puth, while tried and trusted tracks from Adele, Major Lazer and friend of the show Ariana Grande join them on the TOTP stage. The latest Chainsmokers track is also doing surprisingly well, isn't it?

Debuts: None.

Iiiiiit's the Drake show! In his Slim Whitman-pummelling twelfth week at number 1, the man himself returns to duet with Rihanna on their two current hot tracks. And of course he comes on at the end of the show to do One Dance - this time in a raved-up megaversion thanks to a fortuitous encounter with Calvin Harris.

Making more modest strides up the chart are Dua Lipa, Jonas Blue and a couple of debutants in Kent Jones and Christine and the Queens. Shawn Mendes's possibly problematic Treat You Better is also making inroads.

Debuts: JP Cooper, Christine and the Queens, Kent Jones.
