Top of the Pops, 17th December 2015

Christmas is coming on fast, the goose is bulking up alarmingly, and the Pogues are scaling the chart once again, earning their annual From The Vault slot. Meanwhile in the present day it's a week of consolidation on the chart, enabling us to re-feature some recent entries from Years & Years, Robin Shulz and friend of the show Jess Glynn.

The most special performance this week is a Major Lazer double bill, where Olly from Years & Years and our friend Jess both fill in for MO, taking the stage alongside new-hit guest vocalist Nyla. Bieber remains at number 1 but is not here in person so we get a montage of pics of his and Ed Sheeran's faces.

No TOTP next week because it will be Christmas Eve, too close to the special (and actually real) Christmas TOTP.

Top of the Pops, 10th December 2015

It's beginning to look a little like Christmas, as Mariah spearheads the annual festive chart invasion; once again an old performance of hers brings Christmas magic to the From The Vault slot. After his domination last week, Bieber takes the day off, but he's still at number 1 so Love Yourself is played over a montage of clips from his already surprisingly long career.

We may not have Bieber, but - it's a Festivus miracle! - none other than Beyonce is finally here to give us the full version of Runnin' in all its glory, alongside Naughty Boy and Arrow Benjamin. Coldplay give us a cockle-warming acoustic version of Adventure Of A Lifetime, and friend of the show The Weeknd is here to perform The Hills in full Santa regalia.

Justin Bieber dominates the top 40 this week, but Justin himself is otherwise engaged so we only get the video for his number 1 hit, Sorry. Sorry. That means we have to look some way down the chart to fill up our show, giving opportunities to exciting bubblers-under Robin Schulz and Yates, Grace, and Shawn Mendes.

Friends of the show The Weeknd and Ed Sheeran also return to ramp up the star power, and we welcome Nathan Sykes, a former member of The Wanted, for a second solo appearance.

This week, more than ever before, is Bieber Week. In an unprecedented chart full house, young Justin has the number one single, the highest new entry and the high climber - and they're all different songs. Fortunately he agrees to grace us with his presence, performing quite a chunk of his newly released album.

Other than that there's a strong X Factor connection: One Direction and Olly Murs are former contestants, Jess Glynne has recently performed on the results show and even Ariana Grande benefits from One Last Time being chosen, during Movie Week for some reason.

Newer sounds come from Ariana Grande, Lost Frequencies and Fetty Wap, while the lovely Little Mix give us a nice sampler of their just-released album. Adele remains at number 1, but we see the video this week as she doesn't want to take any risks with those vocal cords.

In fact there's a lot of star power this week. Not only do Justin Bieber and His Illustrious Highness Drake make the trip over once again (probably to try and get a glimpse of the Tottenham Troubadour), they are persuaded to team up for what may be the most awe-inspiring TOTP performance yet of Mark Ronson's Uptown Funk.

Also here are solid gold friends of the show One Direction and Little Mix, as well as a filmic Sam Smith and a passionate MNEK and Larsson.

The rest is quite eclectic, featuring rock, throwback house, acoustic singerliness, reggae, bhangra and gospel - the last three of those coming in a curveball reworked version of the Major Lazer track.

The top of the charts this week belongs to Sam Smith and his toe-tappin' Bond song, and the singer of the moment is also happy to help out friend of the show Pia Mia on a unique and bewitching version of her long-running hit Do It Again. Weirdly, though, Smith's vocals on the Disclosure track are sung this week by Lorde, who combines it with her own new brothers feature Magnets.

The tempo is kept ebullient by Walk The Moon and Little Mix, and super-regular TOTP featuree The Weeknd is also back again, along with Ed Sheeran.

And best of all, with the dashing Chris Brown unavailable once again, Eyre doubles up to turn Rita Ora's song into a ladies-only par-tay. Selena Gomez's lyric isn't perhaps quite so girl powery, but what can you do, she's still repping the sisters.

To be fair, though, Joe Stone's performance isn't that much better, featuring some awkwardly shuffling backing dancers in the absence of Montell Jordan, whose track it basically is.

Rare appearances ahoy. This week we have a rare appearance from Sia, a rare appearance from Usher, a rare transatlantic visit from Ariana Grande, and a rare appearance from mister number one, Jason Derulo. Lots of American (based) acts in the chart just now, so it's nice that they're happy to come over and perform for us.

Europe is well-represented too, by young Martin Garrix, Avicii and Mans Zelmerlow. Would you believe the only Brit on the show this week is Rita Ora? Or perhaps Parson James is British too, not sure.

Never fear, though, as the lower reaches of the chart bring us a Mumfords medley, an exclusive, never-to-be-repeated Skrillex/Lethal Bizzle collaboration, the delightful Meghan Trainor, and Kodaline.

A bit of TOTP musical chairs this week produces some special one-offs. Including Muse, if you can believe it.

An unusually static chart means that TOTP has space for some long-runners as well as some gems from lower down the countdown than usual. Inevitably this means two corners of the Sheeran/Ezra/Smith triangle - there hasn't been a show without at least one of them since November - but it also means Ariana Grande and the Weeknd, who have been in the lower reaches for a few weeks, plus a couple of minutes of the Weeknd's solo offering - a bonanza of vaguely pervy RnB.

Meghan Trainor's second single is a storming success and the lady herself is in the country to perform it. We welcome back old favourites Sigma/Paloma and Vance Joy, and there's also a welcome suprise visit from Maroon 5. Ronson and Mars remain at the top, and after last week's studio appearance we make do with the video this time.

We're back after the (genuinely made and broadcast) Christmas TOTP and with the chart in its annual gift-voucher period, several of the year's biggest hits are climbing once again. Hence medleys from year-defining acts George Ezra (celebrating the number 1 album) and Bandit/Glynne, as well as the quietly popular Guetta/Martin combo, alongside more current hits from Philip George and Blonde.

John Newman pops in without Calvin Harris for a solo rendition of Blame, accompanied by six people dressed exactly like him doing the same irresistible dance moves. And the number one is Mark Ronson, but sadly we can only show the video. Our producers are working frantically to get him in the studio should he hold on at the top next week.
